Overview
A bit more low-end response is the goal of the 2024 update. The 1200 Tiger GT Explorer brought a few technical modifications to the triple-cylinder engine for more low-end torque, less noise, and increased engine response. Ground clearance improves with raised footrests, and the seat promises more space for the rider.
Within the 1200 Tiger family, the “Explorer” branch is dedicated to long expeditions. Deep within the countryside, in valleys, forests, or remote areas. Going as far and as long as possible is the goal of the GT Explorer version.
The large Tiger truly changes its stature and ambitions. Its completely redesigned silhouette shows more dynamism, erasing the massive feel of the XR. This can be verified technically. The Speed Triple-derived engine is detuned to 150 horsepower, with over 13 kg of torque, an aluminum lightweight frame, a brand new swingarm, a weight reduction of 25 kilograms, Brembo Stylema braking, improved ergonomics, a slimmer profile – Triumph has decided to make a strong statement in the category.
The Explorer is the highest level of finish but also synonymous with a seriously increased fuel tank capacity. It swallows 10 liters of fuel more, for a total of 30 liters. 600 km of range are conceivable, making it a true road-eating machine. Its wide shoulders should provide increased protection. Furthermore, the impressive array of onboard equipment will attract travelers to the top-of-the-line Tiger.
In addition to all the equipment of the other versions, the Tiger 1200 GT Explorer is equipped with: - engine protection bars - a radar blind spot detector - heated seats - tire pressure monitoring - a 16 mm higher handlebar
Only luggage and a top case remain to be added. There's a lot of equipment, but large trail bikes command such prices that an extra 1000 euros or so makes little difference. Then this Tiger 1200 carries so many things (more or less necessary) that one understands the final bill. The above equipment is only available as standard on the Explorer but before that, there is the equipment of the GT Pro, namely: five Riding Modes **, an aluminum engine guard, anti-slip aluminum protection, adaptive cornering lighting, an Up&Down shifter, hill-hold control, heated grips, cruise control, a center stand, a USB socket under the seat, backlit switches and a pair of taillights. All this also affects the weight. Between the base GT (the least equipped and not imported) and the Explorer, 15 kilograms are recorded. We reach here 255 kg fully fueled.
When I say "the least equipped," it doesn't mean it's a stripped-down trail bike. Triumph continuously develops its premium image; so that even the least of its machines is already adequately equipped. So, everything that has been listed above, we add it to a layer of semi-active Showa suspension, optimized cornering traction control, a new 7-inch TFT screen with MyTriumph app for managing a smartphone, navigation and a GoPro, cornering ABS, Magura levers, an adjustable seat (850 or 870 mm), an adjustable bubble pulled (or pushed) on a single handle, handguards, a daytime visual signature and a keyless on-board system.
GT Explorer: a new name to replace the XRT. It sounds better, proves to be much more understandable and instantly summarizes the wishes of this Tiger 1200. BMW has its packs, Triumph opts for a different approach with its trim levels. We reach here the top of the English traveler trail.
* With Continental’s Blind Spot technology, a radar mounted at the rear detects the presence of objects behind the motorcycle. The system can then warn the rider when a car is in a blind spot.
** Ah, I was going to forget to talk to you again about the Riding Modes. Here they are: Road, Rain, Sport, Off-road and Rider (customizable). They act on the throttle response, ABS level, traction control and suspension reactivity. Note that power is reduced to 100 horsepower in Rain mode.
To facilitate access to the seat, the Tiger 1200 receives active pre-load functionality. By pressing the “Home” switch on the switchgear for one second, this function is activated and allows the seat height to be lowered by 20 mm. When the motorcycle exceeds 40 km/h, the suspension returns to the setting defined by the rider. All Tiger 12s of this generation can benefit from this add-on via a software update.
