Overview

When Bologna decides to resurrect a myth, it doesn't do it halfway. The 2016 Ducati Monster 1200 doesn't simply extend a lineage; it redefines it from the core. Exit the air-cooled twin that rumbled beneath the flanks of previous generations. In its place, the 1198’s 11° Testastretta 1198 cc engine, directly from the Superbike program, a powerplant whose DNA still bears the marks of the track. This four-stroke V2 increases from 100 horsepower on the 1100 version to 135 horsepower at 8750 rpm, with 118 Nm of torque available from 7250 rpm. It’s not a bore increase; it’s a heart transplant.

Ducati Monster 1200

What immediately strikes you about the Ducati Monster 1200 is the radical rationality of the chassis. The steel trellis frame, a historic signature of the brand, no longer exists in its entirety, the engine now assuming the role of a structural element, exactly like the Superquadro on the Panigale. This compact architecture isn't just a styling exercise; it doubles torsional rigidity while lightening the structure. The result is reflected on the scales: 182 kg dry weight, or 209 kg fully fueled with the 17.5 liters of the tank. For a machine of this size and power, this is a power-to-weight ratio that seriously rivals competitors like the KTM Super Duke 1290 or the BMW S 1000 R. The wheelbase of 1511 mm, lengthened to stabilize the whole, works in tandem with the aluminum single-sided swingarm, a key component that gives the beast its recognizable stance.

The ergonomics have been rethought with an unexpected pragmatism from the Italians. The seat adjusts between 785 and 810 mm in height, and even descends to 745 mm as an option, opening the machine to less imposing builds. The handlebar, raised and brought closer, creates a less aggressive riding position than the engine’s temperament might suggest. The 43 mm inverted Kayaba fork and the progressive-link Sachs shock absorber provide the foundations on the standard version. For the Ducati Monster 1200 S test, Öhlins takes over with 48 mm and a noticeably more surgical management of oscillations. Braking entrusted to Brembo with its four-piston radial monoblock calipers on 320 mm floating discs is beyond reproach, the Bosch 9MP ABS, disconnectable in three levels, adding a final layer of active safety.

Ducati Monster 1200

The onboard electronics represent the real generational change. Three riding modes Urban, Touring, and Sport modify the throttle mapping, the level of intervention of the eight-level traction control, and the behavior of the ABS. In Urban, power is limited to 100 horsepower for less frantic daily use. In Sport, the 135 horsepower are unleashed without filters, with maximum throttle response. The TFT dashboard adapts its display according to the selected mode, switching from a minimalist city-oriented reading to a Superbike-style bar-type tachometer for committed sessions. It’s legible, consistent, and avoids navigating endless menus while loading the Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tires in 190/55-17.

The used Ducati Monster 1200 represents today a rational purchase for those seeking a characterful naked without the new price tag displayed at €13,690 at launch. The Ducati Monster 1200 technical specifications speak for themselves for number enthusiasts, but it’s in the saddle that the machine truly convinces. It is aimed at an experienced rider, aware of what 135 horsepower implies in such a compact frame, and mature enough not to spend their days with the traction control turned off. It’s not a machine for beginners; it’s a machine built to last.
