Overview
When Bologna decides to set the clocks right, it’s not done gently. The Monster 1100 generation had its qualities, its air-cooled desmo twin, its raw character. But facing the KTM 1290 Super Duke R and other Aprilia Tuono V4 models that were increasing the pressure in the high-displacement naked bike category, Ducati could no longer afford to stall. The response is the Ducati Monster 1200, and it’s direct.

The engine choice speaks volumes about the ambition of the project. Rather than further inflating the old air-cooled twin, engineers drew on components from the 1198 Superbike, the same engine block that carried the colors of Troy Bayliss on race tracks around the world. The 11-degree Testastretta, second-generation dual ignition, displaces 1198 cc, with a bore of 106 mm and a stroke of 67.9 mm, a compression ratio of 12.5:1, and four valves per cylinder. On the technical specifications of the Ducati Monster 1200, this translates to 135 horsepower at 8750 rpm and 118 Nm of torque at 7250 rpm. The clutch is bathed in oil, without the usual dry Ducati rattle. Major servicing intervals are extended to 30,000 km, which truly changes the game for those who use the machine on a daily basis.
The very structure of the chassis deserves attention. The engine has become load-bearing, exactly like the Superquadro on the Panigale. Only a half tubular steel frame remains, anchored to the cylinder heads, more compact but twice as torsionally rigid as its predecessor. The wheelbase is extended to 1511 mm. In the saddle, the riding position has evolved: the handlebar gains 40 mm in height and moves closer to the rider. The standard saddle height is 810 mm, but it is adjustable to 785 mm without special tools, and even drops to 745 mm with the low saddle option. This is a real novelty for the brand, and it opens the Ducati Monster 1200 to a wider audience, especially those of smaller stature. The fuel tank gains 4 liters to reach 17.5 liters, enough to consider serious stages without stopping every 150 km.

The cycle section follows the same logic of upgrading. The standard version receives a 43 mm adjustable inverted fork and a Sachs mono-shock absorber, with a monocoque aluminum swingarm. For those interested in the Ducati Monster 1200 S, the equipment goes to full Öhlins, 48 mm fork and shock absorber of the same origin, with power increased to 145 horsepower. Braking uses Brembo M4-32 radial monoblock calipers with four pistons on floating 320 mm discs, controlled by a radial master cylinder. The Bosch 9MP ABS is switchable in three levels. On the electronics side, the DSP pack also manages traction control in eight levels and three distinct riding modes: Urban limits power to 100 horsepower with maximum electronic intervention, Touring releases the 135 horsepower with an intermediate throttle mapping, Sport opens everything with a direct throttle response and a slip control system in the background. The TFT dashboard changes interface depending on the selected mode, from urban display to track-style display with arc-shaped tachometer bar graph.
At 182 kg dry and 209 kg in running order, the Ducati Monster 1200 is not a featherweight. Thirteen kilos more than the 1100, this is the price of water cooling and onboard electronics. On the Ducati Monster 1200 used market, the first 2014-2015 units are now negotiating at accessible prices, often well-equipped with original Ducati Monster 1200 accessories. New, a price of €13,490 positioned it at the top of the segment, facing competitors like the Kawasaki Z1000 or the Yamaha MT-10 which did not yet exist. It is first and foremost a machine for experienced riders: the power is there from the mid-range, the torque pushes hard, and the handling requires a certain complicity to be fully exploited. Beginners will move on. For others, it is a frank, uncompromising and unadorned proposition, consistent from the cylinder head to the 190/55-17 rear tire.
