Overview
When Bologna presented the first Ducati Monster 1200, many loyalists frowned. Too heavy, too serious, too far removed from the nervous and playful roadster that had made the name legendary. The liquid cooling of the Testastretta had certainly brought raw power, but something had been lost in translation. Ducati quickly understood this, and that's the whole point of this 2018 vintage version: a tactical and emotional recalibration, to reconnect with what constitutes the deep identity of the Monster.

The mechanics remain at the heart of the matter. The 1198 cm3 V-twin now delivers 147 horsepower at 8750 rpm and 118 Nm of torque at 7250 rpm, figures harmonized by a new measurement protocol without the engine changing by a single screw. This 2-valve V2, with a compression ratio of 12.5:1 and a bore of 106 mm for a stroke of 67.9 mm, remains one of the most charismatic engines in the naked category. The KTM Super Duke 1290 or the BMW S1000R play in the same yard in terms of figures, but neither speaks to you in the same way in your lower back. The grunt of the Ducati twin, its way of pushing hard from low rpm and unleashing its 118 Nm in the middle of the range, is a signature that Ducati Monster 1200 accessories cannot reproduce, but that every owner recognizes by ear.
The real work of this evolution is hidden in the chassis. The trellis tubular steel frame anchored to the cylinder heads has not moved, but the geometry has been precisely retouched. The wheelbase has been noticeably shortened, the steering head angle modified by a degree. On paper it seems insignificant. In the saddle, the 209 kilograms all full are forgotten much more easily than expected. The seat height at 785 mm remains accessible for an average build, and the riding position, neither too aggressive nor too relaxed, suits both daily urban use and an engaged mountain outing. The fully adjustable 43 mm inverted fork and the progressive rear shock do the job without complaint; aficionados opt for the Monster 1200 S version and its Öhlins suspension, for a finer management of the supports.

The onboard electronics deserve attention. The addition of an IMU inertial sensor has changed the game in terms of braking. Cornering ABS becomes active in curves, which was still reserved for competition machines a few years ago. The four-piston Brembo calipers with radial mount bite on floating 320 mm discs at the front, with a bite that few competitors equal. The eight-level traction control, the three riding modes and the identically configurable anti-wheelie complement an electronic suite that flatters the rider without ever substituting for him. This is where the Ducati Monster 1200 price of €14,290 begins to justify itself.
This Monster version 2018 is aimed at an experienced rider looking for a motorcycle with a strong character without breaking the bank on maintenance or daily risks. It is not a machine for beginners, nor a pure track machine; it is a lively roadster, capable of being docile in the city thanks to its 17.5-liter tank and reasonable range, then transforming into a sharp tool as soon as the road clears. The market for used Ducati Monster 1200 also reflects this lasting appetite; the units are selling quickly, a sign that the reliability reputation of the Testastretta and the brand image constitute a solid argument for resale. Ducati has succeeded in its bet: bringing the Mostro back to its fundamentals without sacrificing modernity.
