Overview
When Bologna decides to course-correct, it doesn't waste any time. The Monster almost lost its soul somewhere between the end of air cooling and the arrival of the liquid-cooled twin: too heavy, too tame, too far removed from the visceral naked that had built the legend since the 90s. The Ducati Monster 1200 2017 version is the answer to this drift, a proper refocusing to put the Mostro back where it belongs, namely in the leading pack of roadsters that inspire you to twist the throttle.

The first thing that strikes you is the silhouette work. Not an aggressive restyling, rather a refinement. The seat adopts more taut lines, inherited from the R version, the silencers gain volume and character, and the fuel tank—slightly reduced to 17.5 liters—becomes narrower at the knee juncture. This isn't a detail: on a naked, this is where the communication between the rider and the machine takes place. The aluminum quick-release fuel tank cap, a return to the basics that appeals to those who knew the old school, is the kind of detail that says a lot about the 2017 version’s mindset.
Under the steel trellis frame, the 11° Testastretta twin of 1198 cc now produces 150 hp at 8750 rpm, regardless of the chosen variant—standard or S. This marks the end of a hierarchy that muddled the message: exit the 135 hp base model, exit the 145 hp S of before. Everyone now has 150, with 118 Nm of torque at 7250 rpm that makes the engine frankly more usable in everyday use than its predecessors. Faced with a KTM 1290 Super Duke R or an Aprilia Tuono V4, the Monster doesn’t play in the same league in terms of raw numbers, but it compensates with a more accessible, less manic temperament that intermediate riders will rightly appreciate. For those interested in Ducati Monster 1200 S 2020 tests or subsequent years, the mechanical foundations remain largely identical.
The real deep-down work is the geometry. Ducati shortened the wheelbase to 1511 mm and reduced the steering head angle by one degree. On a naked of this size, these corrections radically change the feel on exit. The steering responds more directly, the bike turns less like a battleship. With 209 kg when fully fueled, the Ducati Monster 1200 isn’t a feather—the KTM Super Duke is 15 kg lighter—but this chassis work largely compensates for that handicap. The 43 mm fully adjustable inverted fork and the progressive-link monoshock do the job as standard; the S version adds Öhlins for those who want to tweak the settings to obsession.

The braking deserves attention. Four-piston radial Brembo calipers bite on 320 mm floating discs at the front, and the cornering ABS—made possible by an IMU inertial sensor—is the real novelty of the update. Compared to a classic ABS, the difference is felt as soon as you start to seriously load the front in a corner: the system intervenes without brutality, without destabilizing the trajectory. Add three riding modes, eight-level traction control, and an eight-notch wheelie control, and you get an electronic suite that has nothing to envy to sportbikes from a few years ago. At €14,290, the Ducati Monster 1200 positions itself in a premium segment, consistent with its equipment. Those looking for a used Ducati Monster 1200 will find a good deal on the 2017-2019 models, machines mature enough to be reliable and recent enough to feature this modern electronics.
This Monster is made for a rider who wants sensation without constantly fighting with his bike. Not for the absolute beginner—150 hp on 209 kg demands respect—but accessible to a confirmed rider looking for a companion for committed rides as well as daily commutes. This is where the strength of this version lies: it has become versatile again without denying the character that has defined the Monster name for thirty years.
