Overview

When Ducati released the Hypermotard 950, the message was clear: this machine doesn’t seek to conquer the highway or seduce the tourist laden with saddlebags. It wants to bite, shake, provoke. The 937 cm3 L-twin at 90° — a typical paradox at Bologna, the marketing figure never quite matches reality — spits out 114 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 96 Nm of torque at 7,250 rpm. On paper, that’s reasonable. In practice, with only 200 kg all fueled up to move, this power-to-weight ratio places the Ducati Hypermotard 950 in a category where smiles are involuntary and trajectories creative.

Ducati Hypermotard 950

The development work between the 939 and this model year deserves to be commended. The compression ratio climbs to 13.3:1, the exhaust camshafts have changed profile, the injection bodies have gained a millimeter, the cylinder head cover is made of magnesium, the chain tensioner is made of aluminum. Result: 1.5 kg have been eliminated from the engine block alone, a torque curve that frankly wakes up from 3,000 rpm, and an availability of power that fits well with the supermoto character of the beast. The six-speed gearbox has also been reworked for more precise gear locking and a less capricious neutral. These are details, but on a motorcycle that is piloted by instinct, every detail counts. The 2021 Euro 5 update cost nothing in terms of performance: the Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP 2021 and earlier versions display the same maximum values.

The electronics have followed the same logic of serious upgrades. The six-axis inertial platform manages traction control, wheelie control, and an active ABS in corners. The 4.3-inch color TFT screen reprises the instrumentation philosophy of the Panigale, with virtual tachometer, gear engaged, and speed displayed as a priority. Three riding modes structure the experience: Sport, Touring, Urban. The bidirectional quickshifter, standard on the Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP, remains an option on the standard version, as does the DMS smartphone interface. A USB socket under the saddle completes the package. Faced with a KTM 890 SMT or an Aprilia Tuareg 660 that play in neighboring registers, the Ducati assumes a more radical philosophy, less versatile, more demanding.

The steel trellis frame returns to the sources of the concept, recalling the Hypermotard 1100 of the origins. The rear frame, also made of steel tubes, breaks with the aluminum choices of the previous generation. The 45 mm Marzocchi inverted fork offers 170 mm of travel, the Sachs mono-shock provides 150 mm at the rear, with rebound and preload adjustments. Four-piston Brembo radial calipers bite 320 mm discs. The 870 mm seat imposes its conditions: the Ducati Hypermotard 950 A2 exists, restricted for recent licenses, but short-statured riders will have to accept playing on the balls of their feet. The wide handlebars favor quick changes of support, the seat height has been remodeled to free the rider's movements. Everything is designed for the solo rider. The passenger seat is there, the passenger footrests are removable; it’s an indication.

At €14,990, the Ducati Hypermotard 950 is clearly positioned above its German-Austrian rivals. For this budget, the used market also offers Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP used models or Ducati Hypermotard 950 RVE models at often interesting prices. The RVE version, with its vintage Supermoto livery, and the SP with its Öhlins suspension and Marchesini wheels, represent the culmination of the concept. But even in its basic configuration, the Hypermotard 950 is a motorcycle with a strong character, reserved for riders who seek engagement rather than comfort, who prefer tight corners to long straight lines, and who know that the true Ducati Hypermotard 950 accessory remains above all a good full-face helmet and a worthy track.
