Overview
Imagine a supermoto rider who has grown up, learned to ride fast on the road, and decided one beautiful morning to put on a Ducati suit. That's essentially what the Ducati Hypermotard 950 is. Not a tamed maxi-trail, not a sportbike disguised as an urban machine, but a motorcycle designed to bite into the asphalt with its teeth, without pretending to be anything other than what it is. The price of €12,690 for the standard version sets the tone: it's neither sensible nor extravagant, but clearly in the territory of those who know what they want.

This 937 cm³ L-twin — still named 950 for commercial reasons that only Bologna understands — now produces 114 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 96 Nm of torque at 7,250 rpm. On the Ducati Hypermotard 950 technical specifications, these figures appear modest compared to a KTM 890 Duke R or a Husqvarna 701 Supermoto, but the Testastretta engine has been thoroughly revised for this 2019 generation: compression ratio increased to 13.3:1, exhaust camshafts reworked, injectors widened, hydraulic clutch. The result is felt from low rpm, with four-fifths of the torque available from 3,000 rpm. Where the 939 felt like it was spinning in the void in the city, the 950 pulls cleanly from idle to the redline. With 200 kilograms all fueled up for a 14.5-liter tank, the power-to-weight ratio remains honest, even though the SP version shaves off a few precious grams thanks to the Marchesini rims and Öhlins suspension components.
The chassis is where Ducati made a symbolically strong choice. The steel tubular trellis frame returns, recalling the DNA of the first Hypermotard 1100. The rear subframe, also in steel, breaks with the aluminum parenthesis of the previous generation. The aluminum monobrach remains, visibly, almost insolent. The 45 mm Marzocchi inverted fork, fully adjustable, manages 170 mm of travel at the front; the single-sided shock absorber with linkages handles 150 mm at the rear. Four-piston Brembo calipers with radial mounting bite down on 320 mm floating discs with precise and controllable bite. For a Ducati Hypermotard 950 real-world test, the 870 mm seat height dictates that you shouldn't be too short-legged. It's not a flaw; it's a statement of intent.
The onboard electronics place this generation a notch above its predecessor. Six-axis inertial platform, traction control and anti-wheelie cornering, cornering ABS, three riding modes Sport-Touring-Urban: the Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP benefits from the bidirectional quickshifter as standard, which the standard version must order as an option. The 4.3-inch color TFT screen displays a legible virtual tachometer and the USB socket under the saddle discreetly solves the problem of a dead smartphone. This level of equipment brings it closer to more expensive machines, and those looking for a used Ducati Hypermotard 950 will need to check if the essential options have been added by the first owner.
This supermoto is aimed at an experienced rider who wants to have fun on small roads without wasting money on Ducati Hypermotard 950 accessories or a Ducati Hypermotard 950 decoration kit to display their status. The seat height and engine liveliness naturally eliminate beginners; the upright riding position on the footpegs, the wide handlebars, and the 53 mm narrowed seat clearly state that the passenger is an optional feature that the machine tolerates reluctantly. With a declared top speed of 200 km/h, the Ducati Hypermotard 950 top speed will never frighten a superbike on the highway, but that's not its territory. On a winding departmental road, it's a different story, and it's precisely there that the bill is fully justified.
