Overview
Imagine a motorcycle that categorically refuses to let you ride sedately. No straight riding position, no digestive stroll, no coffee break without first twisting a few curves in the wrong direction. That's exactly the contract offered by the Ducati Hypermotard 950, a machine built around a single principle: to make every kilometer uncomfortable for anyone who wants to ignore it.

The 937 cm³ V-twin develops 114 horsepower at 9500 rpm and 96 Nm of torque at 7250 rpm, but these figures don't tell the whole story. What matters is that four-fifths of peak torque is available from 3000 rpm, transforming every urban acceleration into a slightly perilous experience for your license. Ducati extensively reworked the engine for this generation: compression ratio increased to 13.1:1, reshaped exhaust cams, enlarged injection bodies, now hydraulic clutch, and a host of spot weight reductions that bring the wet weight down to 200 kilograms. Compared to the 939 it replaces, it's four kilograms lighter, achieved by shaving weight everywhere, from the rims to the frame, including the brake calipers. Facing a KTM 890 SMR or a Husqvarna 701 Supermoto, it remains heavier, but it opposes them with a power that these machines cannot match.
The chassis deserves attention, because it says something about the Bologna philosophy. The steel trellis frame returns strongly, with a rear subframe made of the same material, as on the very first Hypermotard based on the 1100. The 45 mm Marzocchi inverted fork is adjustable in all directions, as is the rear Sachs monoshock, and the aluminum swingarm remains a unique right-side component. The travel is generous, 170 mm front and 150 mm rear, giving the Ducati Hypermotard 950 technical specifications a true supermoto coherence: the motorcycle absorbs degraded roads without complaint, while maintaining the firmness necessary to play equilibristics on the lean angle. The seat perched at 870 mm from the ground is the only real natural filter at purchase; modest builds will pass by or consider the lowered version.
The electronics have been seriously expanded. The six-axis inertial unit manages traction control and wheelie control that take into account the actual inclination of the motorcycle, and cornering ABS logically follows. Three riding modes structure the offer, from the most permissive to the most assisted. The 11 cm color TFT screen reprises the display logic of the factory superbikes, with the engaged gear in the center, the virtual tachometer and the speed clearly displayed. As an option, the bidirectional shifter and the DMS smartphone interface complement the picture, already delivered with a USB socket as standard under the seat. The Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP pushes the logic even further with Öhlins suspensions, forged Marchesini rims, carbon fiber and original-fit Pirelli Supercorsa tires, all for a bill noticeably saltier than the 12,750 euros of the standard version.
This price positions the Ducati Hypermotard 950 price at a premium level that is justified by the list of equipment, but that also excludes beginners as surely as the high seat. This motorcycle is not intended for beginners, nor even for intermediates who have not yet tamed the power of a lively twin-cylinder. Its target audience is the seasoned rider, urban or touring on small roads, who seeks to feel every curve as a physical conversation with the asphalt. Those considering a Ducati Hypermotard 950 used will make a good deal if the suspensions have been maintained; that's where the essence of the pleasure is hidden, and also most of the compromises if they are worn. The rest, engine, frame, electronics, age very well.
