Overview

When Ducati decides to sprinkle a bit of nostalgia onto its torque brute, the result can only intrigue. The 2012 vintage Diavel Cromo is precisely that slightly mad idea: take a muscle bike built to tear up tarmac and give it a retro-chic wardrobe. The gamble is bold, almost contradictory, but the Bologna firm has never been afraid of paradoxes.

Ducati DIAVEL 1200 CROMO

On the aesthetic front, the recipe is refined. The tank is adorned with chrome, the fairing elements switch to glossy black, and the seat features horizontal ribbing reminiscent of Italian productions from the 70s. Even the Ducati lettering adopts period-correct typography. The Diavel Cromo doesn't settle for a simple "special edition" sticker slapped on the side. Every detail has been designed to create contrast between the Diavel's aggressive lines and this patina from another era. The result is divisive, inevitably. Some will see a successful exercise in style, others an unnatural marriage between modern brutality and vintage elegance. Personally, I find the whole thing works, especially when standing still. The chrome catches the light, the black adds depth, and the Diavel's massive silhouette gains a kind of nobility it didn't have in standard trim.

Beneath the bodywork, nothing changes. And that's a good thing. The 1198 cc L-twin Testastretta engine still delivers its 162 horsepower at 9500 rpm and 126.5 Nm of torque at 8000 rpm. With a compression ratio of 11.5:1 and a bore of 106 mm against a stroke of 67.9 mm, this engine remains a mechanical beast that turns every twist of the throttle into hard acceleration. The steel trellis frame, connected to two aluminium side plates, handles the horsepower without flinching. The 50 mm inverted fork and rear monoshock offer respectable travel of 130 and 120 mm, enough for spirited road use but clearly not built for off-road. The braking, with its two radially mounted 320 mm discs up front and a 265 mm disc at the rear, proves up to the task of reining in all that power. And then there's the 240/45-17 rear tyre, a genuine dragster slab that gives the Diavel its visual signature and its outrageous grip.

The real sticking point is the price. At 18,990 euros, the Cromo demands a hefty premium over the standard Diavel for purely cosmetic modifications. No performance gains, no additional equipment in terms of chassis or electronics. You're paying for the style, the chrome and the exclusivity. Up against a Yamaha VMax playing in the same price bracket with a 1679 cc four-cylinder, or even a more recent Ducati XDiavel, the bill can seem steep. That said, the Cromo sits below the AMG version, which puts the expense into perspective for brand collectors.

The Diavel Cromo is aimed at a very specific audience. Not beginners, with its 162 horsepower and 210 kg dry weight demanding real riding experience. Not track enthusiasts either — the low 770 mm seat height and stretched-out riding position clearly point toward muscular cruising. This Diavel speaks to lovers of fine Italian machinery who want to stand out in the car park at Sunday morning's café racer meet. With its 17-litre tank and a claimed top speed of 250 km/h, it can also devour A-roads without breaking a sweat. But let's be honest, you don't buy a Cromo for its versatility. You buy it because you want a Diavel that tells a different story, a machine that combines Bologna's mechanical violence with a nod to the past. And on that front, it has no real competitor.
