Overview
Close your eyes and think of a Ducati 916. Open them on the Cagiva Mito EV 2003. The visual impact is real: perimeter double beam aluminum frame, fairings with a taut line, 40 mm inverted fork, rear wheel shod with a 150/60-17 tire. In the photo, it's hard to believe that the engine under the fairing doesn't exceed 124.63 cc. It is precisely there that lies all the seduction, and all the problem, of this little Italian.

This two-stroke single-cylinder engine is a mechanically sharp character. In its unrestricted version, it delivers 36 horsepower at 12,000 rpm and 22.9 Nm of torque at 11,000 rpm. On 129 kg dry weight, this propels the machine up to 175 km/h, a figure that elicits a wry smile from riders of 600 sportbikes encountered at a traffic light. The 6-speed gearbox, introduced on the 2000 version along with redesigned rims and a revised intake circuit, allows you to exploit the narrow powerband characteristic of two-strokes. You have to rev it high, stay on the pipe, never let the revs drop. It’s a discipline in itself.
In France, regulations require power restriction to 15 horsepower for the A1 license, and there, the charm seriously cracks. The mechanics remain rigorous, the chassis still as sharp, but the gap between what the motorcycle seems to promise and what it actually delivers becomes difficult to ignore. Direct competition, an Aprilia RS 125 or a Honda NSR 125, suffers the same restriction, but none demands 5,795 euros at purchase, a price that flirts with certain used 500 cc in good condition. The positioning is bold, to say the least provocative.
The other side of the Mito, the one that advertising posters do not evoke, is maintenance. A two-stroke pushed to this level of compression, 7.4:1 for a bore of 56 mm and a stroke of 50.6 mm, tolerates no negligence. The risk of seizing is concrete, documented by generations of owners. The engine requires regular monitoring, rigorous gearbox oil changes, constant attention to lubrication. It’s the implicit contract with this type of machine: it gives you pure pleasure, you give it time and money.

The Mito EV is aimed at a very specific audience, someone who knows what they are buying and accepts the pact. A young rider looking for a cheap sporting initiation will pass on by, the usage budget and mechanical constraints will quickly exhaust them. On the other hand, for a passionate person who wants to work on their riding, explore the limits of a competent chassis on a small displacement, or simply own one of the most beautiful motorcycles ever produced under 125 cc, the Cagiva delivers exactly what it announces. No comfort, no versatility, no compromises. Just the motorcycle in its most concentrated form, for those who ask for nothing else.
