Overview
Talking about Zontes in France five years ago was an invitation to condescending smiles. Today, the Chinese brand regularly tops the 125cc sales charts, and the Roadster R has played no small part in that. This compact roadster with its fractured design — all sharp angles and geometric volumes — turns heads in traffic. That is precisely the point.

The styling divides opinion, there is no denying it. The Roadster R's lines look like what a video game designer might produce when given a blank sheet with no production constraints. Some find it fascinating, others find it aggressive. But nobody confuses it with a Honda CB125R or a Yamaha MT-125, and that is a kind of victory in a segment where silhouettes too often look alike. The short, stubby exhaust reinforces the impression of a machine that isn't trying to please everyone at any cost.
Beneath that angular bodywork, Zontes had the good sense not to cut corners on the mechanics. The 125 cc single-cylinder develops 14.6 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 12.7 Nm of torque available from 7,000 rpm. These figures sit in the upper range of the category, sufficient to reach a top speed of 120 km/h. The 6-speed gearbox shifts cleanly, and the slipper clutch is a rare attention to detail at this price point that proves its worth during hard downshifts. Liquid cooling and fuel injection ensure reliability and emissions compliance in line with Euro 5 standards.

What truly sets the Roadster R apart from its direct competitors is its level of equipment. For 3,287 euros, you receive a 47 mm inverted fork, an adjustable monoshock, keyless start and locking, full LED lighting, a colour TFT screen, a USB port and a 12V socket, backlit switchgear, and an aluminium swingarm. A MT-125 or a CB125R charge noticeably more for comparable equipment. Build quality, historically a weak point of Chinese production, has improved significantly on this generation.

The only drawback concerns the overall compactness of the package. At 150 kg fully fuelled and with a seat height of 785 mm, the Roadster R is primarily aimed at riders of average stature. Taller riders will find themselves cramped over longer distances. For everyone else — beginners and urban commuters alike who want character without sitting the full A licence — this machine offers genuine agility and intuitive handling. It fulfils its role as an accessible 125 without ever appearing bland, and that is ultimately all that is asked of it.
