Overview

Close your eyes for a second. Imagine a taut fairing, an aluminum perimeter frame, an inverted 40 mm fork diving towards a large front disc. You're thinking of an Italian 900 cc or more, something from Bologna with a V-twin and a hefty price tag. Open your eyes: you have a 125 cc motorcycle in front of you. That’s the kind of confusion the Cagiva Mito EV has been sowing since its debut, and it remains its most compelling argument.

Cagiva 125 MITO EV

The 124.63 cc two-stroke single-cylinder engine develops 36 horsepower at 12,000 rpm in its unrestricted version, with a torque of 22.9 Nm available at 11,000 rpm. On paper, these figures resemble those of a small-displacement competition motorcycle, and that’s exactly what the Mito claims to be. In France, the legal restriction reduces power to 15 horsepower, which radically changes the character of the machine. The engine loses some of its punch, and frustration quickly sets in for anyone who has already heard this single-cylinder howling without restraint. The 2001 EV version nevertheless brings concrete improvements compared to previous generations: 6-speed gearbox, six-spoke rims, airbox, exhaust and ignition unit revised. Details that matter when you’re trying to get the most out of a small engine pushed to its limits.

129 kg dry weight, a geometry tailored for lean angle, 110/70 tires at the front and 150/60 tires at the rear mounted on 17-inch rims: the Mito handles like a true sportbike, with all the rigor that implies. You don’t hop on this to pick up bread. Comfort wasn't the concern of the engineers who designed this chassis, and the 14-liter tank doesn't claim to be for grand adventures either. The announced top speed of 175 km/h in the unrestricted version gives an idea of what this small engine can do when you let it express its full power.

The flip side of the medal is paid in cash. A high-revving two-stroke requires sustained attention, regular servicing, and constant monitoring to avoid seizing, a risk inherent in this type of engine pushed to its limits. The Mito is not a motorcycle you neglect without quickly paying the mechanical consequences. And the price of 5,795 euros, displayed like a large motorcycle, places this 125 in a category where it rubs shoulders with motorcycles of much higher displacement. Faced with an Aprilia RS 125 or a Honda NSR 125, the Cagiva plays in the same elitist register, but its price requires a solid conviction before signing.

Cagiva 125 MITO EV

The Mito EV is aimed at a specific profile: the young rider who wants to progress seriously, learn to manage power, work on their cornering precision. Not a beginner without experience, nor someone looking for a versatile mount. A passionate person, who accepts the maintenance constraints of a competition engine and sees the French restriction as an obstacle to be legally circumvented as soon as they obtain their A license. For that person, the Mito remains a rare riding experience in this displacement, a concentrate of sporting sensations packaged in bodywork that impresses well beyond its 125 cc.
