Overview
For years, the BMW R 1200 R has played an ungrateful role. Wedged between the GS that reigns over the trails and the RT that dictates the law to touring riders, it occupied the roadster segment without really making a splash. Competent, solid, well-built, yes. Desirable? Less obvious. The 2015 LC version changes the game with a frankness that surprises even those familiar with the brand. BMW didn't just graft a new engine onto an old carcass. It's a character overhaul.

The 1170 cm3 flat-twin is the centerpiece of this renewal. Water-cooled in critical areas, it delivers 125 horsepower at 7750 rpm and 125 Nm of torque at 6500 rpm, 15 horsepower more than the previous generation. These figures, however, only tell part of the story. This engine is first and foremost a way of experiencing the road: a progressive rise in revs, a readily available torque, a suppleness that allows for leisurely cruising in sixth gear at low revs. Nothing to do with the S 1000 R and its assumed brutality. The BMW R 1200 R 2015 is aimed at those who want character without seeking constant adrenaline. The shaft drive confirms this philosophy, eliminating any chain maintenance constraints while bringing a linear acceleration progression.
The other notable change concerns the front end. The Telelever is gone, replaced by an inverted 45 mm fork directly derived from the S 1000 RR. This change has a direct consequence on the sensations: one loses the almost absence of dive under braking that the brand's loyalists are familiar with, but gains in steering precision and feedback. Coupled with a wheelbase of 1515 mm and the Paralever at the rear, the chassis of the BMW R 1200 R LC offers a healthy balance between stability and agility. The brakes follow the same level of requirement, with two floating 320 mm discs gripped by radial four-piston calipers at the front. The whole inspires confidence without ever seeming aggressive.
On the electronics side, BMW offers a solid base as standard: ABS, traction control ASC and two riding modes. Options allow you to go much further with the DTC, the Pro shifter, the ESA Dynamic or the cruise control. This is where the shoe pinches a bit. Displayed at 13,400 euros for the base version, the motorcycle quickly becomes a salty addition as soon as you tick a few boxes in the catalog. For those looking for a used BMW R 1200 R, the first years of production are negotiated at much more reasonable prices on the used market, and the technical specifications remain relevant today. The ergonomics complete the picture with a saddle available in four heights, between 760 and 840 mm, which widens the spectrum of compatible builds.
The BMW R 1200 R targets a motorcyclist who has passed the initiation bike stage, who covers varied kilometers without specializing in a single use. Neither a track rider, nor a great traveler with luggage and a BMW R 1200 R top case permanently screwed on, nor a pure urbanite. A versatile driver who wants a lively motorcycle, capable of handling a weekend in the mountains as well as a daily commute. Faced with the Ducati Monster 1200 or the KTM 1290 Super Duke R, it seems less radical. But this restraint is not a defect. It's a positioning. The R plays the efficiency over the duration rather than the immediate effect, and on this ground, few large-displacement roadsters do better.
