Overview

Subtly, the 1200 Tiger has gained quite a few new elements in 2024. A whole set of small parts to improve everyday comfort. No exterior modifications attest to this, but the Tiger received new crankshafts, alternators, and balance shafts to increase engine inertia and low-rpm torque. Quieter, the three-cylinder engine also offers a smoother clutch, and vibrations reaching the rider are short-circuited by the handlebar and riser bushings (a carryover from the Explorer versions).

It also wants to facilitate accessibility on board. A flatter seat offers more space, while the "Active Preload Reduction" function automatically lowers the rear suspension of the motorcycle by 20 mm when stationary. Finally, it caters to those adopting a very dynamic riding style: the footpegs are raised to take more lean angle before scraping.

The on-board atmosphere is intended to be more pleasant, while the thriller can begin. We are neither in the savanna nor near the approaches of Bengal. Yet, we hear a hoarse, threatening, intrepid rasp. A large tiger is approaching, hunting down the best trail-GTs. For more than 10 years, it has circled around them, but now, it truly considers them prey.

For its hunt, the 1200 Tiger has been completely redesigned in 2022. A tremendous amount of work by the designers allowed it to take a significant step forward. More powerful and much lighter. It adopted the 3-cylinder engine from the Speed Triple RS, one of the best large roadsters of the moment. Hence a gain of 9 horsepower to reach 150 bhp, less weight, less bulk, and more torque despite its displacement being smaller than the previous engine. The 1215 cm3 era is over!

Combined with the rev limit and a narrower rear tire, the large Tiger will boost its acceleration as well as its agility. Given the origin of the engine, Triumph has certainly kept a few tricks up its sleeve for future developments. It should therefore support the club for quite some time. But before that, it also shows more aptitude for lifting the terrain. Despite the reduced displacement, it develops more torque. Its 13.2 kg m shows a remarkable progression – consider that the force increases from 122 to 130 Nm.

With a new frame, a completely redesigned swingarm (farewell monobras), a less cumbersome appearance, and improved braking (Brembo Stylema, 320 mm discs), the English trail sits between sport and touring. Its equipment starts with curve responsiveness for traction control and ABS. Then there are handguards and the Keyless locking system. Braking moves to a noticeably higher level with larger discs (320 mm instead of 305 mm), and the famous Brembo Stylema calipers. As for the suspension, they are semi-active on all versions. A center stand and a small aluminum engine guard are also added. Other small touches are planned to make the journey pleasant, such as the addition of deflectors to assist the windscreen, some space under the seat with a USB socket, backlit switches, and a high-tech cockpit. As you move up, you notice the presence of additional headlights, heated grips, and then you arrive at the dashboard where a few electronic aids are hidden.

The 7-inch (almost 18 cm) color TFT screen is standard on all Tiger 1200 – on the Pro, it is accompanied by 5 Riding Modes (Sport – Road – Rain – Off-Road – Rider customizable). It won't take long to realize that the headlights are adaptive in corners, that the thumb can command an Up&Down shifter, that you can do without the gymnastics of the hands for hill starts because there is a Hill Hold system; then the dot reveals a cruise control.

Thus equipped, the Triumph Tiger 1200 GT Pro can be presented as a much more seasoned machine than the previous XRx; it even outperforms the XRt in most areas. Facing the German benchmark, the challenge remains tight. But never has the GS been so attacked and even jostled by the competition. The tiger can now be among the most threatening.
