Overview

How do you improve low-speed control? How do you get more responsiveness in slow-speed maneuvers? With a large machine, you like to have torque for that delicious feeling of traction, and a solid response to the throttle. Triumph has modified its large three-cylinder engine to just offer a bit more cream in the tea. With a balance shaft, an alternator rotor, and a crankshaft reworked, the 1200 has more inertia and more low-end force. Other small modifications make the engine more progressive, quieter, and bring more comfort to the clutch.

A new seat, a reinforced will, and the most imposing of English tigers sets off on a mission. Once again, a trail will attempt to conquer the most difficult of challenges. Not the crossing of a country, the discovery of a kangaroo village, or listening to Aya Nakamura for more than 20 seconds. Much harder: to unseat the GS from its undeniable efficiency.

More precisely, the Adventure version. Triumph has completely redesigned its large Tiger to allow it to face numerous terrains and the best globetrotters in the world. In its Rally Explorer version, it becomes more than a challenger. It is a true Magellan of the road. As well equipped as a Martian rover and seasoned like a Highlander.

Like the other tigers, it is powered by a new engine, smaller yet more powerful. 150 horsepower take it far, fast, and long. On the Explorer models, the fuel tank is 50% larger, or 30 liters of fuel in stock. The manufacturer announces ranges of up to 600 km. Which can be achieved on many terrains, the motorcycle being equipped with frankly off-road tires: Metzeler Karoo in 90/90-21 and 150/70-18.

Other elements are exclusive to the Explorer, such as the rear-mounted radar. It detects approaching objects in blind spots to warn the rider if a zebra decides to overtake. If it decides to swing back savagely, it will hit the upper crash bars. It’s hot in the savanna. But it will perhaps be arid and cold plains that are under the wheels. No stress; in addition to the heated grips already present on the Rally Pro, the derrieres will receive the good care of the heated seats with independent settings. Last point, the handlebar is 16 mm higher to give a more dominant riding position.

The Rally Tigers are not oriented towards TT racing solely by their wheels. Their suspension travel is greater (220 mm) than on the GT models, and they feature an additional “Off-Road Pro” riding mode. It deactivates ABS and traction control, more of a hindrance than anything else when you have the skill and mastery of the slide on loose terrain.

We cannot forget the profusion of equipment shared with the Rally Pro. It’s dizzying. Center stand, tire pressure monitoring system, hill-start assist, keyless system, up & down shifter, seat (quite high) adjustable in two positions, active suspension, IMU inertial unit, ABS and angle-reactive traction control, adaptive cornering headlights, auxiliary lights, a 7-inch color TFT screen with a home app (phone management, navigation, and GoPro piloting), six riding modes, an adjustable windscreen, handguards, an aluminum engine guard, and crash bars. The Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer thus has a veritable cage arch over the torso.

Consequently, looking at the options is almost useless. Let’s look at the essentials of the 1200 Tiger. This machine has managed to lose 25 kg since the previous version. Impressive! Braking has gone to a sporty level with Brembo Stylema calipers and larger discs (320 mm). The chassis and swingarm are new, eliminating almost 7 kg alone. The inverted fork has been thickened to 49 mm. The total weight is 261 kg ready to ride. That’s 7 kg less than a 1250 GSA but 25 more than an Africa Twin Adventure Sports.

There’s so much equipment that we almost forgot to mention the cruise control, the USB socket, the backlit switches, the daytime running lights, the ….. Stop! It’s worse than a car. Only doors and, worse of all, two extra wheels are missing.

It’s the most expensive, the most expeditionary, the most demonstrative of Triumph’s trails. Nothing has been left to chance, whether for going to the end of the departmental road or camping under a baobab. Of course, few will go that far with such an engine. It conveys a dream and that’s pleasing; without denigrating its capabilities. A small percentage of globetrotters will be able to actually use it. The majority of users will think otherwise – hope is more exhilarating than the sigh when passing mountain trails.

To facilitate access, the Tiger 1200 receives active pre-load functionality. By pressing the “Home” button on the switchgear for one second, this function is activated and allows the seat height to be lowered by 20 mm. When the motorcycle exceeds 40 km/h, the suspension returns to the setting defined by the rider. All Tiger 12s of this generation can benefit from this add-on via a software update.
