Overview
Six in-line cylinders under the fairing, 1649 cm³ that purr like a turbine at idle: Munich decided to boldly play the card of reasoned excess with the BMW K 1600 GT. While the GTL focuses on a rolling lounge experience, the GT carves its path with a more tense, more physical register. It is aimed at the long-distance rider who wants to devour the kilometers without sacrificing the pleasure of tackling a mountain pass at a brisk pace.

This six-cylinder engine is the centerpiece of the package. Its 160 horsepower at 7750 rpm is comfortable on paper, but it’s the 175 Nm of torque from 5250 rpm that changes the nature of the beast. On the throttle, the response is frank, almost destabilizing for those unprepared: a Kawasaki GTR 1400 or a Yamaha FJR 1300 certainly offer muscular four-cylinder engines, but they cannot reproduce this sonic texture, this velvety linearity that defines the signature of BMW’s six-cylinder engines. For the BMW K 1600 GT technical specifications, the numbers speak for themselves, but it’s in the saddle that the engine reveals its true nature.
Weight is the inevitable friction point with this machine. 319 kg fully fueled is the reality of such a specification. At a standstill and at low speeds, you need to be attentive, especially with a seat height of 810 mm. A rider of average build will feel the kilos when maneuvering in an underground parking garage. However, as speeds increase, the mass disappears into the operation. The bridge-type aluminum frame, the Duolever front suspension, and the shaft drive absorb imperfections with an efficiency that would make many less burdened motorcycles blush. The BMW K 1600 GT top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, but you never reach that mark lacking confidence.

The GT distinguishes itself from the GTL with deliberately sporty choices. The handlebars are lowered, the footpegs raised and set back, the seat is higher at 810 mm, and the screen is less bulky. The result is a position that places the rider more within the motorcycle. Those seeking comfort options for the highway will find in the catalog a BMW K 1600 GT comfort footpeg, a large windscreen, or BMW K 1600 GT luggage, as the list of optional BMW K 1600 GT accessories available is particularly long. No top case as standard, unlike the GTL: this is a positioning choice, not a shortcoming.

The digital cockpit is not outdone. A 5.7-inch TFT screen dominates the center of the dashboard, controlled by an iDrive wheel inherited from the manufacturer’s sedans. The screen is electrically adjustable, the adaptive headlight follows the lean angle in corners, and ABS is paired with three engine maps as well as a palette of electronic options including traction control, ESA, and tire pressure monitoring. It’s complete, well integrated, and partially justifies a new price of 21,280 euros. For those looking for a used BMW K 1600 GT, this new price serves as a reference: 2021 or 2022 models are negotiated with a significant depreciation, and the platform's reliability is now well documented, although some owners report BMW K 1600 GT problems related to electronics in the early years of production. Faced with a discontinued Honda Pan-European or an FJR 1300 that has remained on more classic foundations, the GT imposes a vision of sporty touring that no one else has really managed to duplicate with so many cylinders under the fairing.
