Overview
Imagine 343 kilograms of Bavarian metal gliding down the highway as if gravity were a default option that could be deactivated. This is the permanent paradox of the BMW K 1600 GT, this luxury touring motorcycle that stubbornly refuses to act like a heavy bike despite what the scale indicates. Since its creation, the K 1600 GT has always presented this dual personality: a comfortable flagship for long crossings, but alert enough not to blush during a series of turns. The 2024 version, a direct descendant of the evolutions introduced in 2022, pushes this logic even further.

The heart of the matter is this 1,649 cc inline-six cylinder engine that sings a mechanical melody unlike any other in the world of production motorcycles. On the BMW K 1600 GT 2024, BMW has managed to maintain 160.5 horsepower at 6,750 rpm and 179.5 Nm of torque at 5,250 rpm despite the Euro 5 constraints, which imposed a reduction of one-third of emissions compared to previous standards. The new BMS-O engine management unit, coupled with four lambda probes and two knock sensors, constantly adjusts the air-fuel mixture for combustion as close as possible to the ideal stoichiometric ratio. The net result is that peak power arrives even 1,000 rpm earlier than before, which translates to even more pronounced muscular availability in the midrange. The slightly increased torque allows the BMW K 1600 GT, including luggage, to be loaded without the engine ever feeling strained on steep inclines. The optimized MSR system also manages engine braking to avoid any unpleasant behavior during deceleration, which is reassuring on long descents.
The chassis, however, has not changed, and that is good news. The aluminum perimeter frame, the Duolever fork at the front, and the Paralever monobrach with 135 mm of travel constitute a proven base that no one would complain about. Dynamic ESA now integrates automatic load compensation as standard: it doesn't matter whether you are traveling alone or accompanied with the cases, the motorcycle adapts without intervention. This is the kind of detail that makes the difference on a BMW K 1600 GT specification that you begin to read in detail. The transmission still goes through a six-speed gearbox and shaft drive, a combination that favors durability on long journeys. The Shifter Pro option, inspired by the S 1000 RR, allows gear changes without a clutch, a useful oddity on a mount of this category but which illustrates BMW's desire to cover a wide spectrum of users.

The cockpit deserves special attention. The 10.25-inch TFT screen, now standard, integrates navigation and groups all information without requiring an additional GPS screen. Four configurable keys simplify access to menus. Keyless start, introduced in 2023, is added to the already long list of comfort equipment. Three riding modes (Rain, Road, Dynamic) and traction control DTC complement the electronic aids. Hill start and reverse assist will be of service to anyone who has not yet fully tamed maneuvers with a motorcycle of this size. The 64 liters of integrated luggage give the K 1600 GT a more compact appearance than the GTL or Grand America versions, without sacrificing carrying capacity. For BMW K 1600 GT accessories, the catalog remains extensive: heated grips, heated seat, audio system are available according to your budget.

At €28,590 new price, the BMW K 1600 GT price positions this motorcycle in a high segment that confronts it with the Honda Gold Wing and Kawasaki 1400 GTR. Faced with the Gold Wing, more automatic and more American in spirit, the BMW defends its ground with a more sonorous engine and superior dynamic versatility. Faced with the Kawasaki, the technological and refinement gap is obvious. The BMW K 1600 GT is primarily aimed at the European grand traveler who wants to cover thousands of kilometers per year without giving up pure mechanical pleasure. It is not a motorcycle for beginners, despite all the electronic crutches on board: the max speed of 200 km/h and the 343 kilograms to manage require real experience. But for those who have the skills and the budget, few machines offer so much in a single package.
