Overview

Imagine crossing the Swiss Alps at dawn, 343 kilograms beneath you gliding as if the mountain didn’t exist. That’s precisely the promise the BMW K 1600 GT has kept since its creation, and the current version has not renounced this immense ambition. Six-cylinder inline engine, 1649 cc, 160.5 horsepower peaking at 6750 rpm: the technical specifications of the BMW K 1600 GT resemble those of a German sports sedan, and that’s no coincidence.

BMW K 1600 GT

What distinguishes the recent generation is first and foremost a discreet but surgical evolution of engine electronics. To survive Euro 5 without losing a horsepower, Munich completely revised the combustion management: four lambda probes instead of two, two knock sensors that analyze the block’s frequencies in real time to adjust ignition cycle after cycle, and a BMS-O control unit that orchestrates all of this silently. The resulting figure is there: 179.5 Nm of torque at 5250 rpm, an increase compared to previous generations, transmitted without loss to the rear wheel via a six-speed gearbox and a driveshaft. The driveshaft, incidentally, is the right choice for this type of machine. Zero chain maintenance over miles of highway, and acceleration progression that perfectly matches the grand touring temperament of the machine. For those who want to shave a few tenths of a second during gear changes, the Shifter Pro—borrowed from the S 1000 RR—is available as a factory option.

The chassis, however, has not changed. Aluminum perimeter frame, Duolever at the front, Paralever behind with 135 mm of travel. Dynamic ESA manages the suspension completely automatically, regardless of the load: solo light or duo with full luggage, the pitch correction intervenes without you having to touch anything. It’s comfortable, even if some purists will regret that you no longer really drive the motorcycle but simply indicate a direction. The maximum speed is limited to 200 km/h, which, given the size, seems reasonable. For those looking for precise data on the BMW K 1600 GT technical specifications or the BMW K 1600 GT 0-100 km/h acceleration time, know that the acceleration is brisk and the weight is hardly noticeable beyond 50 km/h, where the machine finds its natural register.

The cockpit has been deeply modernized. The 10.25-inch TFT screen integrates navigation, which makes BMW K 1600 GT accessories such as GPS mounts less essential than before. The four configurable keys prevent getting lost in endless menus, E-Call provides reassurance for long isolated stages, and the USB-C charging port is waterproof. The integrated luggage offers 64 liters, which positions the GT one notch below the GTL in capacity but gives it a more agile silhouette. The footrests are positioned to promote an active riding position, and if you are considering long highway journeys, the elevated highway footrests for the BMW K 1600 GT are a purchase to consider.

The question of price remains. At 26,790 euros, the new BMW K 1600 GT price places the machine face to face with the Honda Gold Wing and the Kawasaki 1400 GTR, two serious rivals. The Gold Wing offers a smoother flat-six, more American in spirit. The K 1600 GT responds with superior agility and a technological richness that justifies the price difference for those seeking an engine as well suited for the Bonette pass as for devouring 700 kilometers in one go. It’s not a motorcycle for beginners: 343 kilograms to handle in a parking lot require experience. But for the confirmed globetrotter who wants to travel quickly and comfortably without sacrificing mechanical pleasure, it remains a benchmark that its competitors have not yet managed to dethrone.
