Overview

Four hundred and fourteen kilos fully loaded. The figure lands like a hammer blow, and yet it is precisely there that the story of this Ultra Limited Low begins: in Milwaukee's determination to make a colossus accessible to the many potential buyers it had been turning away. Harley didn't redesign the beast — they simply brought it closer to the ground, and to the rider.

Harley-Davidson 1690 ULTRA LIMITED LOW FLHTKL

The key difference comes down to one number: a 685 mm seat height, versus 740 mm on the standard Limited. Fifty-five millimeters that change everything for a shorter-statured rider. But Milwaukee didn't stop at that single adjustment. The suspension drops an additional 25 mm, the handlebar moves 5 cm closer to the rider's chest, the transmission and clutch covers are visually slimmed down, the grips are reduced in diameter, and the side stand is positioned lower for easier reach. Every detail has been considered so that getting to grips with such a machine no longer feels like an acrobatics contest. The windshield loses a few centimeters of height to reduce turbulence in the rider's aerodynamic cockpit. The logic is airtight and consistent.

Beneath the 22.7-liter tank beats the Twin-Cooled High Output, a 45-degree V-twin displacing 1,690 cc with partial liquid cooling. With a bore of 98.4 mm, a stroke of 111.1 mm, and a compression ratio of 10.1:1, the engine produces 86 horsepower at 5,010 rpm — but more importantly, 137.3 Nm of torque from just 3,750 rpm. On this type of machine, it is that massive torque, available very early in the rev range, that defines the touring character. The claimed top speed of 170 km/h is not the point; what matters is the ability to devour thousands of kilometers while remaining composed, and in that regard, the big V-twin does its job with metronomic regularity. The six-speed gearbox and belt drive complete a package calibrated for the long haul, not the racetrack.

The onboard equipment places this motorcycle in a class of its own. The BOOM! Box 6.5 GT multimedia station integrates a touchscreen, 100 watts of audio output, and GPS navigation. The Reflex linked braking system pairs twin 300 mm front discs with four-piston calipers and an identical rear disc. The Daymaker LED headlights, adjustable air suspension, heated grips, cruise control, HD-Smart keyless ignition, and two-tone paint make up a grand touring equipment list. Measured against a BMW K 1600 GTL or a Honda Gold Wing, the Ultra Limited Low competes in the same league in terms of specification, with a radically different philosophy: here, ostentatious American style is as much a part of the experience as comfort.

Harley-Davidson 1690 ULTRA LIMITED LOW FLHTKL

The target audience is clear: the dedicated Harley touring rider who lacked the inseam to tame the standard version, or the couple wanting to cross the United States or criss-cross Europe with luggage, sound system, and GPS without sacrificing riding pleasure. This is not a city motorcycle despite the low seat height, and no one will sell it as such. At €29,110, the price tag makes sense given the content, even if the premium over the standard Limited remains an accounting curiosity that is difficult to justify rationally. It is the price of accessibility, and some buyers will pay it without hesitation.
