Overview

When Munich decides to address markets where purchasing power doesn’t allow dreaming of an S 1000 R, the solution is the BMW G 310 R, and it comes out of TVS Motor Company factories in India. Some will see this as an anomaly in the Bavarian catalog, others as a smart entry point into the propeller brand. The reality is less clear-cut: this small 313 cc roadster has managed to evolve over the years, from the 2017 and 2018 versions to the 2025 edition, gaining points where it really counts.

BMW G 310 R

What stands out in this model year is the aesthetic work. BMW has clearly opened the sketchbook of the S 1000 R before tailoring the headlights and flanks of its little sister. The LED daytime running light weaves a visual thread between the G 310 R and its older siblings, the F 900 R or the R 1250 R. The result is convincing, noticeably more assertive than previous versions. The downside is the dashboard, which remains an LCD screen when the KTM Duke 390, a direct competitor in this size class, now features a TFT screen. At €5,700, one could have hoped for better in this specific area.

The 313 cm3 single-cylinder engine, mounted upside down in the steel tubular frame with front admission, develops 34 horsepower at 9,250 rpm and 28 Nm of torque at 7,500 rpm. These figures won’t make power meter operators tremble, but for a 158 kg dry weight roadster, the progression is linear enough to learn to dose the throttle without stress. The announced top speed is around 141 km/h, which places the BMW G 310 R in the good average of its category, ahead of less refined single-cylinder engines. Fuel consumption of 3.33 liters per 100 km is a real argument on a tank of only 10.98 liters: range remains reasonable in urban or suburban use, the natural playground of this machine.

The technical equipment is not embarrassing. The 41 mm inverted fork, the front caliper with four pistons signed Bybre, a Brembo subsidiary, the standard ABS and the cast aluminum swingarm, all of this establishes a solid foundation for a motorcycle at this price. Ride-by-Wire and a slipper clutch are additions that would have seemed incongruous on an engine of this displacement ten years ago. Today, they have their usefulness, if only to lighten the effort on the left hand during downshifts in town. The four-position adjustable levers are also welcome for hands of different sizes.

BMW G 310 R

The BMW G 310 R test reveals a motorcycle that knows exactly what it is: an accessible, well-bred roadster, intended for the A2 license or the urban rider who wants a premium badge without mortgaging their apartment. On the used market, examples from the 2020, 2021, 2022 or 2023 model years are negotiated at attractive prices, which strengthens the proposition. The BMW G 310 R technical specifications reassure, maintenance remains within reasonable ranges, and the BMW G 310 R accessories available in the official network allow customizing the machine without artisanal tinkering. It’s not the motorcycle that will make track racers or long-distance travelers dream, but to start or navigate in the city with a bit of style and reliability, it fulfills its contract seriously.
