Overview

When Munich decides to play in the small displacement class, it doesn't do so halfway. Well, almost. The BMW G 310 R 2023 receives a facelift that deceives at first glance, but scratch the surface a bit and you realize that the mechanics haven't budged a single bolt. It's the game of mastered cosmetic evolution, a strategy that premium manufacturers know well when it comes to refreshing an entry-level model without exploding development budgets.

BMW G 310 R

The visual result is convincing. The front end has clearly taken inspiration from the S 1000 R, with this more aggressive LED headlight unit and those knife-edged lines that link it to the high-end roadsters in the family. The daytime running light signature is consistent with the F 900 R and R 1250 R, and it works. You end up with a motorcycle that looks serious for €5690, which isn't so obvious in this category. On the other hand, the instrumentation remains a combined LCD screen, while the KTM Duke 390 has been playing the TFT color card for a while. This technological lag is annoying on a machine sold as modern in 2023.

Mechanically, the 313 cm3 single-cylinder engine has been reworked to meet Euro 5 standards, but its values remain identical: 34 horsepower at 9250 rpm and 28 Nm of torque at 7500 rpm, for a top speed announced at 143 km/h. This isn't brute performance, it's performance calibrated for a specific audience. The inverted intake in the steel tubular frame is a technical feature that distinguishes this engine from direct Indian competition. The slipper clutch is a real good news, not to avoid lockups on corner entry at this power, but to lighten the left-hand lever operation on a daily basis. The addition of Ride-by-Wire and four-position adjustable levers completes equipment that far exceeds what one would expect from a motorcycle manufactured by TVS Motor Company in India.

This partnership with TVS, indeed, deserves attention. Without it, this BMW G 310 R probably wouldn't exist at this price. The front caliper is signed Bybre, a Brembo subsidiary, with four pistons and radial mounting. The 41 mm inverted fork, the aluminum swingarm, the standard ABS: the list of equipment is honest. A wet weight of 164 kg and a seat height of 785 mm make it an accessible machine for average builds and recent license holders. The announced consumption of 3.3 liters per 100 km gives a theoretical range of approximately 330 km with the 11-liter tank, which is correct for mixed urban and suburban use.

Who rides the BMW G 310 R? For those who want the Bavarian badge on their handlebars without paying the price of an F 900 R, for the young A2 license holder looking for a roadster with visual character, for the urban rider who wants to escape the anonymity of the Japanese small displacement bikes. Used BMW G 310 R models are now easily found, the 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 models having been widely distributed on the secondary market, which drives prices to very affordable levels. The savvy buyer who consults a BMW G 310 R technical specification before purchase will note a very gradual evolution from year to year, without major disruptions, which reassures about reliability over time.

BMW G 310 R

The G 310 R does not claim to revolutionize its category. It settles in, cleanly, with enough equipment to justify its positioning, enough style not to blush in front of the Duke and MT-03 of this world, and enough sobriety to survive the first years of a young pilot who is still learning the trade.
