Overview
When Munich decides to enter the small displacement arena, it’s not done discreetly. The 2020 BMW G 310 R is precisely the kind of object that challenges certainties: a 313 cc German motorcycle, manufactured in India by TVS Motor Company, sold for 5,140 euros, and yet capable of carrying the Bavarian star without embarrassment. It’s difficult to summarize more clearly the strategic ambition behind this roadster.

This four-stroke single-cylinder engine hides a mechanical originality that few people notice at first glance. The engine is tilted rearward, the cylinder head inverted compared to classic configurations: the intake draws in from the front, the exhaust spits out the rear. A layout adopted by only a few Yamaha YZ crossers. On the BMW G 310 R technical specifications sheet, we read 80 mm of bore for 62.1 mm of stroke, proportions that encourage revving rather than pulling on torque. The 34 horsepower peaks at 9,500 rpm, the 28 Nm arrives at 7,500 rpm. It’s honest, but the KTM 390 Duke responds with 44 horsepower on the scale, and 10 kilos less on the scales. The G 310 R weighs 158.5 kg fully fueled, with its 11-liter tank. The power-to-weight ratio is not its strongest argument.
Facing the Duke, the debate is real. The Austrian plays nervousness, provocation, constant elbowing. The Bavarian prefers a stable road holding, the well-calibrated 41 mm inverted fork, the Bybre four-piston calipers derived from the Brembo galaxy, the standard ABS. The steel tubular frame and the cast aluminum swingarm compose a solid architecture, without frills. The BMW G 310 R test reveals a motorcycle that doesn’t seek to impress at first, but that convinces over time. The announced BMW G 310 R top speed hovers around 143 km/h, consumption is 3.33 liters per hundred. For daily urban or suburban use, the figures are serious.
The true hunting ground of this machine is international. Emerging markets, India, Southeast Asia, where the BMW logo alone is enough to make the difference against a Honda CB 300 R or a Yamaha MT-03. In these markets, a premium motorcycle accessible, 785 mm seat height, contained dimensions, careful finish, is a formidable commercial proposition. In Europe, the context changes. The BMW G 310 R price of 5,140 euros places it in a pricing turbulence zone, where more powerful and less expensive motorcycles compete for the same A2 licenses.

This roadster is aimed at an urban rider or a young license holder who wants the reputation of a brand without accepting too brutal a compromise on manufacturing quality. Those looking for a used BMW G 310 R or scrutinizing BMW G 310 R used prices on classifieds sites will probably find a better ratio. New, it requires a clear conviction: one chooses Bavarian sobriety, the supposed reliability of a solid industrial partnership with TVS, and a mechanical reality designed to last. It’s not the most exciting motorcycle in the segment, but it’s perhaps the most reasonable. Which, for some, is worth as much as a good twist of the wrist.
