Overview
Benelli, that’s the story of a celebrated brand that never quite managed to be reborn… for the moment, but that could well change. A name everyone knows for a few iconic models like the Leoncino, or the Sei and its six-cylinder engine. The modern era of the brand hasn’t been kind: the TNT fire-breathing machines were superb but suffered from reliability issues. The Chinese group Qingjiang, at the helm since the early 2000s, has recently decided to start from a blank sheet of paper and establish a new technical and strategic benchmark.
Farewell, then, to the large three-cylinder engines in favor of focusing on the mid-displacement market. The first test in India proved the validity of this new strategy, with the brand selling significant volumes there. To conquer Europe and restore its reputation, Benelli is bringing new motorcycles, including this TRK 702. Unsurprisingly, the flourishing trail market on the old continent is the target in an attempt to find outlets and quick sales. We’s see if this TRK 702 has the assets to achieve that…
This TRK 702 is a bit like the story of the frog who wanted to be bigger than the ox, as in La Fontaine’s fable. In terms of design, at Benelli, they’s generous, giving us a 700 that has the volume of a 1200. It’s more or less the same recipe that Benelli already proposed with the TRK 502.
The front fairing is imposing but well-designed; it deserves to be praised. It’s quite a fun motorcycle, because when you look at it head-on, you get a bit of a feeling of seeing Walt Disney’s Donald Duck. The LED optics are expressive, the shapes voluptuous and dynamic; parked on the side stand (lateral only), this Benelli makes a good impression.
However, on closer inspection, you’s notice that the windshield is not adjustable and that the 5-inch TFT screen, although it benefits from Bluetooth connectivity, appears a little simple in its display and functions compared to some competitors from CF Moto or Voge. The dashboard simply displays the speed, the rev counter, the fuel gauge or engine temperature, the time and the traditional trip A and B meters. Fortunately, we do benefit from a USB socket.
The fittings are complemented by handguards, a luggage rack and passenger footrests as standard. A nice touch for touring. The touring, which can be considered with a generous 20-liter tank or the very high handlebars, which will undoubtedly offer a very comfortable riding position.
This generous style hides a steel trellis frame. The frame is associated with a generous front fork with a diameter of 50 mm, without adjustment, with 140 mm of travel. The rear shock absorber offers 154 mm of travel and has adjustable preload and rebound. It connects the frame to the aluminum swingarm.
This chassis offers a very reasonable seat height in the road trail category with only a perch at just 790 mm from the floor. Benelli has also worked on the narrowness of the motorcycle with a fairly slim tank, allowing you to be really comfortable placing your feet on the ground at the traffic lights.
On this road version, the TRK 702 is equipped with 17-inch wheels fitted with Pirelli Angel GT tires. The tire size is 120 at the front and 160 at the rear. Note that an X version is also available with spoked wheels more suitable for off-road riding, with a 19-inch front wheel in this case. At the heart of these wheels, we find braking, which on paper seems muscular: 320 mm discs at the front with radial 4-piston brake calipers and a 260 mm disc at the rear, single-piston caliper. The whole is managed by an ABS that cannot be disconnected.
And it was necessary to have such equipment for this TRK 702 because you can’s really say that it’s a lightweight model with a weight of 238 kg in running order. That’s the weight of a 1200 cm3 trail bike.
Benelli equipped its TRK 702 with a traditional engine base with a 698 cm3 twin-cylinder engine, angled at 180°, delivering 70 hp (51.5 kW) at 8,000 rpm and a torque of 70 Nm at 6,000 rpm. This configuration is similar to what Kawasaki does (particularly on the 650 Versys). We should therefore find similar sensations with an engine less available than a CP2 from Yamaha angled at 270°. The Benelli engine will need to be revved a little to deliver its power in a fairly linear way.
The throttle is connected to the engine by a traditional cable, so electronics are absent from the motorcycle’s piloting, and there are no different engine maps.
A2 engine restriction is offered if requested at the time of order; for a second-hand model, for example, the restriction will be charged at 250 euros at the brand’s dealerships. Engine maintenance is to be carried out every 6,000 km, intervals that therefore come up quite often for high-mileage riders. The motorcycle warranty (parts and labor) is 3 years.
This Benelli TRK 702 therefore has many assets to appeal to those looking for a modern, well-designed and well-made trail bike and who don’t want to spend a fortune. Its ultimate asset will undoubtedly be its price to have a good career with us.
By focusing on the essentials, Benelli has been able to contain the price of its motorcycle at 7,699 euros! You’ll need to turn to even more exotic brands like QJ Motor and the SRT 700 X to find a comparable price for a motorcycle of this displacement. A Suzuki V-Strom 650 starts at 8,999 euros.
