Overview
When Yamaha resurrected the Ténéré in 2019, the adventure bike world held its breath. The 700 arrived like a welcome slap in the face of a market crowded with machines that were too heavy, too expensive, or too specialized. Its 689 cc CP2 parallel-twin, 73 horsepower at 9,000 rpm, steel double-cradle frame, and 194 kg dry weight had already made it an accessible benchmark. Four years on, Yamaha builds on its winning formula with this Explore edition, which doesn't attempt to revolutionize everything but to refine what still bothered some riders.

The number one complaint aimed at the standard T7 is its seat height, perched at 875 mm. For an adventure trail bike destined to venture off paved roads, that's not unreasonable, but on the road, stopped at traffic lights, riders of less advantageous stature found themselves walking a tightrope. The Explore addresses this by trimming the Kayaba suspension travel: the 43 mm inverted fork drops from 210 to 190 mm, the rear monoshock from 200 to 180 mm. The seat comes down to 860 mm. Fifteen millimeters gained for twenty of travel sacrificed — the math may seem surprising, but the springs have been stiffened to maintain behavior under load. The Ténéré Explore is designed to be ridden with luggage, with a passenger, over long distances. The five millimeters "absorbed" by the geometry are not an accounting error but a calculated compromise.
This repositioning toward long-distance touring is also evident in the added equipment. A windscreen 50% more generous reduces highway fatigue, side case mounts come standard on the flanks of the bike, and the Up&Down quickshifter eases acceleration on both dirt and tarmac. Yamaha hasn't played the one-upmanship game: no heated grips, no upgraded plush seat, no additional electronics compared to the standard version. The engine, frame, dual 282 mm front disc braking system, and 16-liter tank remain unchanged. The base recipe is preserved; the garnishing is precisely measured.
The weight gain is real but contained: 6 kg extra for a total of 211 kg fully fueled. Compared to a KTM 790 Adventure or a Honda XL750 Transalp, the Yamaha remains in the right bracket for a machine capable of handling secondary roads and rocky tracks alike. The 68.6 Nm of torque available at 6,500 rpm delivers crisp acceleration without pushing the engine to its limits. For a loaded two-up heading for Balkan roads or Moroccan pistes, that's sufficient — and even comfortable.
At €11,799, this Explore edition commands an €800 premium over the standard Ténéré. The gap justifies itself easily when you factor in the windscreen, side case mounts, and quickshifter purchased separately. It clearly targets the average-sized rider who wanted the T7's off-road DNA without fighting a too-tall seat every morning, and who plans multi-day escapes rather than motocross weekends. For those who want to push further into ground clearance and hardcore off-road riding, Yamaha simultaneously offers the Extreme version. Both variants remain exclusive to France, Italy, and Germany, making them a fairly niche choice — but all the more coherent with local riding habits.
