Overview
Imagine the scene: a Pyrenean trail closing in, a large rock across the path, roots spilling out on either side. On a well-mannered trail bike, you put a foot down, hesitate, go around. On a Ténéré 700 Extreme Edition, you lift the bars and ride through. That's exactly where Yamaha wanted to take this variant, pushing the T7 beyond the marked tracks where it was already at home.

The secret of the transformation lies in the suspension. Yamaha lifted the 43 mm KYB inverted fork and rear monoshock from the World Raid and transplanted them onto this Extreme Edition. The concrete result: 230 mm of travel at the front, 220 mm at the rear — 20 mm more at each end than the standard Ténéré. Ground clearance climbs from 240 to 260 mm. Twenty millimetres on paper sounds trivial; on a wet rock in a tight hairpin, it can be the difference between a clean line and ending up on your side. Both ends of the fork and the monoshock remain fully adjustable for preload, rebound and compression, leaving plenty of scope to fine-tune the damping to suit the terrain and the rider.
The 689 cc CP2 parallel-twin, shared across the entire five-variant Ténéré family, produces 73.4 hp at 9,000 rpm and 68.6 Nm at 6,500 rpm. This engine doesn't compete in the big-muscle cube category of an Africa Twin or a KTM 890 Adventure R: from the outset it favoured agility over raw power, and that remains consistent on the Extreme. The six-speed gearbox handles off-road punch-outs well, the 205 kg wet weight stays reasonable for the package, and the 16-litre tank provides decent range without adding unnecessary bulk.
What sets the Extreme Edition apart visually is that chunky front mudguard, which is a clear nod to the world of crossover enduros — in the vein of a muscled-up XT 660. It changes the look, it polarises opinion, and that's entirely intentional. Yamaha added a radiator guard, a chain guide, wider titanium footpegs, and a seat with a flattened profile and reinforced padding. That last point deserves attention: between the raised suspension and the new seat, saddle height reaches 910 mm. Which is to say you'll need either a decent inseam or a well-practised mounting technique to put a foot down confidently at a standstill. Riders of average height will make friends with the sidestand.
At €11,899, this Extreme Edition sits between the standard Ténéré 700 and the World Raid, in both price and purpose. It clearly targets the rider who wants to leave groomed tracks behind without crossing into outright competition — someone who rides mountain trails at the weekend and wants a machine capable of swallowing rough terrain without complaint. Its distribution is deliberately restricted to France, Italy and Germany, three countries with an obvious tradition of alpine trail riding. Yamaha offers alongside it an Explorer version aimed more at long-distance touring: two different philosophies, one shared mechanical foundation, purposes that don't really overlap. The Extreme is for those who look at the trail with desire, not caution.
