Overview

Are you looking for an adventure trail that won’t break the bank, but you’re worried about ending up with a bike that’s too tame, lacking character? Take a moment to consider this clever Italian proposition, the Benelli TRK 502 X. In a world obsessed with cubic capacity escalation and three-digit horsepower, it dares to offer something else: the essence of travel, in a reduced format and at a contained price.

Benelli TRK 502 X

Positioned against genre giants like the BMW GS or the Africa Twin, the Benelli TRK 502 X indeed resembles a small player. Its parallel-twin 500 cm3 engine delivers only 47 horsepower, a power rating suitable for an A2 license, and its 46 Nm of torque won’t shake mountains. Its maximum speed is around 170 km/h, which is honest without being electrifying. But that’s precisely where its reasoning becomes interesting. It doesn’t focus on brute performance, but on accessibility and a certain form of simplicity. For many daily adventurers or as a first large trail bike, this technical specification is more than sufficient.

The major drawback, and it must be faced, is its weight. With 235 kg fully fueled, it is heavy, very heavy for its category. This massive build, inherited from its steel frame and construction, detracts from its agility, especially off-road where its “X” designation would seemingly want to take it. Nevertheless, it features adventurer styling: 19 and 17-inch spoked rims, 220 mm ground clearance, raised suspension, and a raised exhaust. It’s serious on paper, and allows it to leave the pavement with more conviction than a road-focused trail bike. But on technical trails, its weight is felt. It is more of an adventurer for dirt roads and forest tracks than for true obstacle crossing.

Where the Benelli TRK 502 X 2021 and its subsequent versions are appealing is in their evolution and equipment. Benelli has listened to forum feedback. On recent models, the screen becomes TFT, heated grips are added, and tire pressure monitoring arrives. The swingarm switches to aluminum to shave off a few kilos. These improvements, coupled with a still very contained price of around €7000, make it a remarkably coherent proposition. Its 20-liter tank and reasonable consumption (around 4L/100km) offer it a beautiful range, the key element for any traveler.

So, who is it for? For the globetrotter who wants adventure styling without the budget or complexity of a large displacement engine. For the A2 beginner looking for an imposing and comfortable trail bike for long journeys. For those for whom travel takes precedence over pure performance. Its reliability, often discussed on Benelli TRK 502 X forums, seems to have solidified over the years and Euro 5 updates. It’s not the most refined or lively machine in the segment, but it has character, complete equipment, and it fulfills its promise: to make adventure accessible. Sometimes, the best motorcycle isn’t the most powerful, but the one that simply makes you want to hit the road, and this one does it very well.
