Overview
Japan regularly presents charming little machines, which we may not necessarily see here but which retain attention. Like this CB 500 Super Four. A roadster that is classic in appearance... and deceptively so, as it has a powerful feel and has little to do with the CB 500 we know.
The “Four” in its name has piqued your interest. The 4 beautiful exhaust tubes even more so. Indeed, this little machine is powered by a 4-cylinder engine, in the same lineage as the CB 750 Four, CB 1000 Super Four, and so many other models with 4 aligned pistons.
Our CB 500 “Hornet” produces almost 48 horsepower from its 471 cm3 twin. In the Land of the Rising Sun, the 502 cm3 engine (presented here) is rated at around 80 horsepower!!! A considerable amount of power, which many entry-level mid-sizes would envy. However, this engine is not for everyone. With a low individual cylinder displacement, power is only available at high RPM. This roadster will therefore require dynamic riding and engine wails to exploit its watts.
This 500 also shows other assets, also proving that it is not a basic model to learn on but a real little rascal with pedigree. The CB 500 Super Four features an aluminum swingarm, an inverted fork, a Pro-Link mounted shock absorber, 4-piston radial Nissin brake calipers, two front brake discs, HSTC traction control, 5 Riding Modes, a 5-inch color TFT screen with RoadSync app, as well as the first evolution of the E-Clutch assisted clutch.
The steel frame is supportive and devoid of a cradle, which perfectly highlights the beautiful exhaust manifold. The tank and overall lines echo the CB 900 F from the 70s; a strong trend at Honda at the moment. This CB 500 Super Four is also a demonstration: it is no coincidence that it was unveiled at the CIMAMotor, the Chinese motorcycle show. The Japanese manufacturer is thus presenting high-end in a pocket-sized format. Will we have the chance to see it too? Unlikely but singularly exciting.
