Overview
Do you believe the true spirit of modern enduro lies in electronic complexity and superfluous kilos? The 2024 Yamaha WR450F, on the other hand, makes the opposite bet. By grafting itself onto the bare bones of the formidable YZ 450 F motocross bike, Yamaha has crafted a machine of almost provocative purity for the segment. With its advertised weight of 117 kg fully fueled, it immediately establishes itself as a benchmark for lightness, a significant argument when it comes to chaining hours in the saddle on a rocky trail. The price, however, flirts with 10,000 euros, a substantial but coherent entry ticket for a motorcycle so focused on pure performance.

Under the 7.4-liter fuel tank, it’s the heart of the YZ that powers this WR450F. The reverse-head cylinder, with its 52 horsepower, has not been sterilized for enduro use. Yamaha has instead worked on the mapping and intake to offer a more docile power delivery at low RPM, without stifling its explosive character when you twist the throttle. Comparison with a KTM 450 EXC-F or a Husqvarna FE 450 is inevitable. The latter rely on omnipresent electronics and ultra-metered riding. The 2024 Yamaha WR450F, on the other hand, favors a more direct mechanical dialogue, even if it is not lacking with its adjustable traction control and Power Tuner app to fine-tune the mapping from your smartphone. It's a philosophical choice: technology is there to serve, not to screen.
The real revolution of this new 2024 WR450F lies in its chassis. The aluminum frame, derived from the motocross model but with reworked flexibility, and the KYB suspension with a shortened 10 mm stroke radically lower the center of gravity. Result? A seat height of 955 mm which, combined with a refined 50 mm bodywork, transforms handling. On technical terrain, the rider merges with the machine, moving effortlessly. This is where the promise of agility truly comes to life, far from the sensations of a heavy trail bike that some can give. This exceptional maneuverability makes the WR450F a preferred tool for the demanding rider who seeks to progress, much more than a simple crutch for a beginner.
So, who rings the death knell? This Yamaha WR450F is clearly not a compromise motorcycle. Its modest fuel tank and lack of road homologation make it a pure specialist for the trail and enduro track. It targets the dedicated practitioner, the one who thrives on raw sensations and who understands that true lightness is bought at the cost of certain sacrifices, such as the comfort of a six-speed gearbox. It is a demanding motorcycle that rewards technique and commitment. For those who dream of rally or supermoto conversion, the mechanical base is a fantastic breeding ground, as proven by the numerous modifications on Yamaha WR450F models from 2019 to 2023. But in its original version, it remains an aristocrat of the earth, a clear statement of intent from Yamaha in the enduro 450 war. It doesn’t give anything away, it offers in return an authenticity that is increasingly rare.
