Overview
Do you remember those motorcycles that didn't fit into any category, those do-it-all machines that looked you straight in the eye asking "and so, where are we going?". The 2010 Yamaha TDM 900 is a direct heir to this philosophy, a sportbike disguised as a trail bike, a Swiss Army knife on two wheels that refuses to age. With its diamond-shaped aluminum frame, it sheds the last gram of superflu, displaying a dry weight of 191 kg. A figure that, for a motorcycle in this category and with a 20-liter tank, commands respect. It's a healthy base, a promise of agility.

The heart of the beast is this famous 897 cm3 parallel-twin engine, an evolution of the 850 block. Yamaha grafted injection onto it, gaining 9 horsepower and a little more than 1 mkg of torque, to reach 86 hp and 88.8 Nm. You can clearly feel the gain in the mid-range; the engine has more punch, it pulls with the authority of a locomotive. But let's admit it, it sometimes lacks that touch of madness, that wail at high RPMs that makes the racer shiver. It's a touring engine, reliable and generous, which prefers long distances to the frenzy of the tachometer. The six-speed gearbox, finally adopted, is a real improvement in smoothness and flexibility, perfect for swallowing up kilometers or negotiating a mountain pass.
Facing competitors such as the Triumph Tiger 800 of the time or the BMW F800GS, the TDM 900 plays the road card. Its 43 mm fork and tires in 120/70 at the front and 160/60 at the rear speak the language of asphalt. It is more sporty, more inclined, more precise in corners than a true trail bike. The braking system, directly inspired by that of the R1, is of biting efficiency. But this is where the shoe pinches for many. In 2010, ABS was still not standard. An absurdity for an off-road motorcycle, even a very road-oriented one. Yamaha offered it as an option, for 400 euros and 7 kg extra, a system derived from the FJR 1300. Today, if you are looking for a used Yamaha TDM 900, be sure to check this option in the ad, it is an undeniable safety guarantee.
Who is it for? The motorcyclist who refuses compromise, who wants an upright and comfortable position for the daily commute, but a machine capable of transforming into a sporty weekend companion without flinching. With a seat height of 825 mm, it remains accessible. Its then new price of 9399 euros made it a serious proposition. Today, the used market is its kingdom. Whether you consult a Yamaha TDM 900 specification sheet for the details or scroll through Yamaha TDM 900 used ads - the classifieds, you will find an adult, robust motorcycle, and endlessly modifiable. Yamaha TDM 900 motorcycle forums are full of ideas: a Yamaha TDM 900 high windscreen to better cut through the air, a Yamaha TDM 900 top case for travel, or even a Yamaha TDM 900 exhaust to give it a little more voice.
The TDM 900 is not the most spectacular motorcycle, nor the most modern. It is a witness to an era when Yamaha designed machines with a strong character, without worrying about labels. It doesn't have the madness of a Super Ténéré, nor the adventurous pedigree of a GS. But it possesses this tenacious versatility, this ability to do everything with discreet elegance. It is an honest motorcycle, which never lies to you. And on the long road, that is often the best quality.
