Overview
You remember the TDM 850, that motorcycle which didn’t really have a category but which had a personality that could withstand anything? Yamaha decided to give it a makeover in 2008, and the result is this Yamaha TDM 900. The first thing that strikes you is the adoption of an aluminum frame, a notable evolution that gives a sensation of improved rigidity from the first bends. The forks go to 43 mm, the tires are wider, and the braking system, directly inspired by the R1, offers precision that did not exist on the previous generation. But the real change is hidden under the motorcycle’s fairing.

The 897 cc parallel twin has been reworked, with the introduction of fuel injection and an increased displacement. The figures speak for themselves: 86 horsepower at 7500 rpm and nearly 89 Nm of torque. On paper, this is a nice progression. On the road, the engine has more low-end power, the in-gear acceleration is more responsive, but it retains that somewhat placid character that defines the TDM spirit. It doesn’t rev with the enthusiasm of a sporty V2; it’s a road companion more than a track bike. The six-speed gearbox is a welcome improvement, smoother and more suited to long journeys.
Speaking of journeys, that’s where the Yamaha TDM 900 finds its audience. With a 20-liter tank, a 825 mm seat that offers a comfortable position, and a wet weight of 222 kg, it is designed for the touring rider who also wants to venture onto a dirt track without too much fuss. Versatility remains its main asset, even though, to gain efficiency and precision, Yamaha has made some concessions on pure comfort, which is slightly lower compared to the 850. But the balance is still there.
And then, there’s the ABS. Available since 2005 on the TDM, it adds approximately 7 kg and an extra cost, but for many buyers looking for a used Yamaha TDM 900, it will be a determining safety argument. It’s a system derived from that of the FJR 1300, robust and effective. When you browse listings for a used Yamaha TDM 900 – Le Bon Coin, the presence or absence of this system can influence the price and the choice.
Ultimately, this Yamaha TDM 900 doesn’t seek to revolutionize the market. It refines a concept that has proven itself: a motorcycle capable of everything, without being the best in any specific area. Its new price, around 9145 euros at the time, positioned it as a serious option against more aggressive sport touring motorcycles. For those who want a unique, reliable machine, capable of accompanying them everywhere without drama, it remains, even today as a used model, a very sensible proposition.
