Overview
Baja 1000, Big Bear Run, Barstow-Vegas, AMA Scrambles National. Behind these names that carry the scent of California dust lies an era when Triumph swept the podiums with its TR6 Trophy. Sixty years later, Hinckley plays the sand-and-stones card once again with this Street Scrambler Sandstorm, a limited series of 775 units worldwide. A tighter run than the brand's other 2021 special editions, delivered with its certificate of authenticity, as it should be.

The paintwork does most of the heavy lifting. Tri-color tank tinged with sand grey, knee-grips back on the flanks, bolted aluminum skid plate beneath the engine, front mudguard raised trail-style, protective grille over the round headlight. At the rear, Triumph wielded the pruning shears: taillight cut back to the strict regulatory minimum, turn signals tucked up under the seat, mudflap gone. A set of off-road trimmings that stays cosmetic, let's be clear, but credible enough to tackle a dirt track without blushing.
Under the tank sits the 900 cc parallel twin reworked to Euro5 specs. Short bore and long stroke of 84.6 by 80 mm, 11:1 compression ratio, 65 horsepower at 7250 rpm and, above all, 80.4 Nm from just 3250 rpm. That's the real signature of this engine, a thick slab of torque available at every level that makes the five-speed gearbox almost redundant. Forget the speedometer that tops out at 160 km/h, that's not the program. The Sandstorm pulls hard between two corners, growls beneath the seat and settles for riding just right.
Tubular steel double cradle frame, conventional 41 mm fork, twin side shocks with 120 mm of travel on each side. Nothing revolutionary, honest classic fare, as on the Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled which plays in the same yard with an 803 cc single that offers less torque. Braking is entrusted to a single 310 mm disc clamped by a four-piston caliper, and a 255 mm at the rear, the whole lot with switchable ABS, three riding modes (Rain, Road, Off-road) and disengageable traction control. Spoked wheels, mixed tires in 19 inches up front and 17 at the rear, USB socket tucked under the seat. The 223 kg wet weight makes itself known as soon as the trail gets tricky, that's the price of admission when you mount a parallel twin on a steel frame.
Then there's the seat at 790 mm, low, welcoming for smaller builds, and ergonomics that are more urban than genuinely trail-oriented. That's the honesty of this Triumph: it embraces its role as a disguised roadster, no hopped-up BMW R nineT Scrambler nor attack machine for hardened long-distance riders. At 11,700 euros, it's aimed at the rider who wants the look, the sound of a British twin, a bit of gravel-track riding on Sundays and plenty of aesthetics the rest of the week. The 12-liter tank betrays this temperament, 180 kilometers of range at a rough estimate, you're not heading off to the Dakar. But to park a bike outside a café and say that yes, you've already taken it out on the gravel, the Sandstorm ticks every box. Nice stylistic move, an honest machine.
