Overview
Do you remember the TDM 850, that motorcycle which somewhat baffled the world in 1991 with its trail look that didn't want to go in the dirt? The Yamaha TDM 900, launched in 2002, is the brand's response to those who were asking for more muscle and modernity. It retains this all-rounder philosophy, but with reinforced technical arguments.

The heart of the evolution lies in its engine. The parallel twin increases to 897 cm3 and adopts injection. The figures speak for themselves: 86 horsepower at 7500 rpm and nearly 89 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm. This is a clear progression over the previous 850, with more low-end power in acceleration. However, some purists regretted that this very linear twin did not rev more sharply. It remains an engine for touring, designed for long distances and loads, rather than for sporty thrills. The gearbox finally gains a sixth gear, useful for the highway, and its operation is smoother.
The other major project is the chassis. Yamaha abandons the steel frame for a double aluminum beam, lighter and stiffer. The fork increases to 43 mm, and the tires are widened, going to 120 at the front and 160 at the rear, on 18 and 17 inch rims. The braking system, inspired by that of the R1 of the time, is effective. These changes make the bike more precise and firm on the road, but some noted a slight decrease in comfort compared to the 850, which was more supple. This is the price of increased efficiency. With a 20-liter tank and a wet weight of 222 kg, it remains a machine designed for travel.
The Yamaha TDM 900 is an intelligently compromised motorcycle. It doesn't chase after sportbikes, it doesn't do real trails, but it covers an immense range of uses. It is the ideal mount for those who want a single vehicle for the city, winding roads, national highways, and two-up travel. Its look, more refined than that of the 850, has found its audience, particularly among police forces who used specific versions. Today, searching for a used Yamaha TDM 900 on Le Bon Coin or elsewhere is an excellent idea for a pragmatic motorcyclist. New prices were around 9000 euros at the time; on the used market, it represents an excellent versatility-reliability ratio. For enthusiasts, motorcycle forums are full of tips, from original stickers to high windscreens, engine guards to top cases, to personalize this borderless touring machine.
