Overview

Can a motorcycle be both a Swiss Army knife and a precision tool? In 2011, the Yamaha TDM 900 attempted to answer yes, pushing further the concept of a road bike with trail characteristics initiated by its predecessors. Beneath its sharp lines, it hides a significant technical evolution, notably an aluminum Deltabox frame replacing the older steel one, a gain in rigidity immediately noticeable when riding. The forks gain muscle with their 43 mm, and the tires widen, going to a 120 at the front and a 160 at the rear, for a more square footprint on the asphalt. You can feel that Yamaha wanted to erase the somewhat “homemade” feel of the first TDM models to target a demanding clientele, those seeking a used Yamaha TDM 900 in good condition rather than a simple curiosity.

Yamaha TDM 900

The heart of the beast, an 897 cm3 parallel-twin, is now fed by injection. The figures are respectable: 86 horsepower at 7500 rpm and nearly 89 Nm of torque. It’s more flexible, cleaner, but let's admit it, this engine sometimes lacks madness. It delivers its power with the regularity of a metronome, perfect for swallowing up kilometers or towing a well-loaded top case, but it will never give you that kick in the back of a large German twin. The six-speed gearbox is a nice evolution, smoother and more precise than the old one. For those who browse Yamaha TDM 900 motorcycle forums, this lack of character is a classic, but it is also what makes it such an easy-going machine.

Where this TDM 900 really stands out is in its road handling. With its 223 kg fully fueled and a seat height of 825 mm, it imposes a certain size, but once in motion, it proves surprisingly agile. The suspension, although slightly firm to preserve dynamics, correctly absorbs imperfections. The braking, directly inspired by the R1 of the time, is effective and progressive. One will regret the absence of series ABS on the base model, a paid option that weighs down the bill and the balance by about 3 kg. For the new price at the time, around 9400 euros, it was a questionable choice compared to the competition.

Versatility remains its credo. Whether you are a globetrotter looking for a comfortable machine for long getaways, or an urban rider needing a high riding position and good ground clearance, it delivers. The GT version, with its high screen, handguards and cases, pushes even further this logic of traveler. Today, finding a used Yamaha TDM 900 on Le Bon Coin can be an excellent plan to acquire a solid, reliable and indestructible motorcycle, provided you accept its somewhat too sensible character. This is the strength and the limit of this sport-trail: it does almost everything very well, but it will never make you scream with pleasure in a helmet. An intelligent compromise, nothing more, nothing less.
