Overview
Even though it is no longer produced, the TDM 900 remains in the manufacturer's catalog, and isn't languishing in stock. 215 units were sold in 1913, 15 more than the famous YZF-R6. An oddity in the motorcycle world, a blend of roadster, trail, and touring machine, this bike patiently awaits the end of stock and, above all, a successor worthy of it. The current version dates from 2010, without changes since the major 850 -> 900 overhaul. From steel on the 850, the twin-spar frame now uses aluminum, the forks increase from 41 to 43 mm, and the tire fitment gains confidence: from 110 to 120 for the front and from 150 to 160 mm for the rear. Like many of the manufacturer's machines, the TDM adopts a braking system closely derived from the R1. The gearbox finally goes to 6 speeds, while gaining in smoothness of operation, and the aesthetics gain in elegance. It’s subtle but certain. The biggest change comes from the engine block. It's still a parallel twin but benefits from injection and its displacement increases by 48 cm3. Torque progresses by more than 1 mkg and power by 9 hp. The engine has more grunt without changing its character. Reps are better, but we would have appreciated more enthusiasm in its revs. Slightly reduced, the general comfort still remains at a good level. It must be said that the bike has become more efficient and more rigorous. You have to make concessions. The TDM spirit remains, versatility being its greatest asset. More punch and more efficiency; what more do you want?
We want ABS! Fine, if you insist. Yamaha has offered it on its TDM since 2005. A system of design analogous to that of the FJR 1300. Count a few hundred euros and 3 kg more to enjoy top-notch safety braking. A GTest version is also available for 1,000 euros more, including a suitcase, suitcase support, bubble, handguards and deflectors.
