Overview
We often hear of adventure bikes as two-wheeled Swiss Army knives, but with the Tiger Explorer XRx, Triumph clearly decided to forge a high-tech samurai saber. In 2016, the British manufacturer didn't just offer options in a catalog; it reimagined the experience of the demanding long-distance traveler around a simple philosophy: the motorcycle must disappear to make way for the pleasure of the road, whatever it may be. And to do that, it must think for itself.

The heart of this strategy beats in a 1215 cm3 three-cylinder engine, a mechanical unit that delivers its 139 horsepower with typically Triumph elegance, combining suppleness and character. But the true genius of this XRx lies in its central nervous system. Triumph calls this TSAS, a semi-active damping system that radically transforms the relationship with the road surface. Thanks to an inertial sensor and a myriad of sensors, the WP suspensions adjust their behavior in real time, analyzing roll, load, and acceleration. The result is a serenity in motion that dismounts at first impact. The motorcycle, yet displaying a dry weight of 246 kg, seems relieved of its worries, following the imperfections of the road surface without ever transmitting stress to the rider. ABS also becomes angular, and traction control gains finesse.
This XRx version is notably distinguished by its dedicated “Off-road” mode, a real added value for those who want to leave the paved road without manual adjustments. The engine mapping softens, traction control takes a step back, and rear ABS can be disengaged. Coupled with the clean and silent shaft drive, it makes it a versatile and incredibly civilized travel companion. The equipment is up to its ambitions: cruise control, heated grips, handguards, and a double 12V socket are standard. For around 17100 euros at the time, it set a serious benchmark against the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure or the Yamaha Super Ténéré, relying more on technological refinement and fluidity than on adventurous ruggedness.
Ultimately, the Tiger Explorer XRx of 2016 is not a motorcycle for novice mechanics or for the pure-bred track rider. It is aimed at the demanding traveler, the one for whom kilometers must accumulate without fatigue, in a cocoon of comfort and active safety. It is a motorcycle that fully assumes its size and weight to offer in return reassuring stability and fullness on the highway. Its flaw? Perhaps to manage everything too well, risking to distance the rider from raw sensations. But to swallow highways in the rain or discover winding passes without a hint of apprehension, it set a standard of sophistication that has, since, influenced the entire category of large adventure bikes. A machine that doesn't just transport you, but orchestrates your journey.
