Overview

Do you dream of an adventure bike with character, evoking warm sand and a distant horizon just in its name? The Triumph Tiger 1200 Desert Edition is made for you, or at least, for the idea you have of it. Because it must be said from the outset, this special edition is primarily a stylistic tribute, a nod to the great deserts more than an extreme raid machine. For around €19,400, you are mainly buying an atmosphere, adorning the solid mechanics of the Tiger XCx with a “Sandstorm” finish and a titanium Arrow silencer that gives it a deeper voice. An aesthetic pack that has its charm, but does not fundamentally transform the beast.

Triumph Tiger 1200 Desert Edition

And what a beast. Beneath this adventurous veneer beats the famous 1215 cm³ three-cylinder engine, a supple and generous mechanic that delivers 141 horsepower and 122 Nm of torque. On the road, it’s a delight: the power is linear, the sound grainy, and the shaft drive brings that serenity typical of grand tourers. But let's admit it, with a dry weight of 246 kg, you're more in a spaceship than a draft horse. Comparing it to a BMW R 1250 GS Adventure, its eternal rival, is instructive: the German bike may seem more balanced at low speed thanks to its flat-twin, while the Triumph deploys its character in the higher revs and on the open road. For the real work on the trails, you will first have to exchange its hybrid tires for proper off-road tires, as this Desert Edition first thinks of asphalt.

It is precisely there that its plentiful equipment makes sense. The list is long: semi-active WP suspension, TFT screen, five riding modes, engine guard, crashbars, cruise control, heated grips, Brembo radial brakes… Nothing is missing. This level of finish justifies the price, close to that of a GS, and makes it an ideal machine for the demanding globetrotter who wants to be able to do everything, from transcontinental travel to sporty mountain rides, without ever sacrificing comfort. The novice rider, on the other hand, may be intimidated by its size and power.

Triumph Tiger 1200 Desert Edition

When searching for a Triumph Tiger 1200 Desert Edition, you may come across 2020, 2021 or 2022 models. The mechanical heart and equipment remain generally identical, making this special series a good buy on the used market. For whom? For those who want a British trail bike with a strong character, equipped with complete equipment and a unique aesthetic, but which will never really go and play in the dunes. It is a dream machine, literally, that will take you far on the road, and a little less far in the dust. A test ride of the Triumph Tiger 1200 Desert Edition will confirm this impression: it is an excellent grand touring machine, designed for adventure… on paved roads.
