Overview
Who hasn’t dreamed, deep down in their garage, of smelling the scent of warm sand and the distant horizon? That’s exactly the promise, more sensory than geographical, that the 2020 Triumph Tiger 1200 Desert Edition attempts to embody. For nearly €20,000, it presents itself less as a Saharan raid tool and more as a stylized tribute to adventure, built on the already well-equipped base of the Tiger XCx. Its name is a program, its “Sandstorm” livery an invitation to travel, but you have to peel back the sticker to see what really lies beneath this desert patina.

At first glance, the package seems appealing: titanium Arrow silencer, Up & Down shifter, exclusive badges, and this paint that turns heads. But the real treasure of this special edition lies in its plethora of standard equipment, almost dazzling. Semi-active WP suspension, five riding modes, TFT screen, engine guard, crashbars, electric windscreen, shaft drive, LED lighting, regulator… the list is as long as the journey it claims to accompany. It borders on technological indigestion, but for the demanding globetrotter who wants ready-to-travel without going through the accessories box, it’s a massive argument.
The heart of the beast remains that famous 1215 cm³ three-cylinder engine, delivering 141 horsepower and 122 Nm of torque. A supple, lively, and incredibly versatile engine, perfect for swallowing up the asphalt of national roads or the long, straight lines of dirt tracks. The sound of the Arrow adds a touch of grain, even if some purists would wish it had a little more character and bite at high revs. Where it falls short is on the scales. Weighing in at 246 kg dry, we’re talking about a mammoth. It commands respect, requires anticipatory riding, and is handled with the scope of a spaceship. In technical terrain or in the city, every kilo is felt, especially compared to competitors like the BMW R 1250 GS, more agile thanks to its low boxer engine.

Just speaking of terrain. Despite its evocative name and adventurous look, the Desert Edition comes shod with hybrid tires, more road-oriented than off-road. A first paradox for a motorcycle that claims its explorer’s soul. Anyone who really wants to get away from the asphalt will need to invest in a pair of more aggressive tires. This is revealing of the real positioning of this machine: a grand trail ultra-civilized, comfortable, and incredibly equipped for asphalt and easy trails, more than a raid beast. Its audience? The demanding traveler who prioritizes comfort, technology, and style over extreme ruggedness. It’s the motorcycle for those who see adventure from a winding road, with the assurance of being able to branch off onto a path without asking questions.

Finding a used Triumph Tiger 1200 Desert Edition today can be a good deal to access this level of equipment without the prohibitive new price. Whether for a 2020, 2021, or even anticipating the 2026 versions, the essential thing remains to understand its soul. It’s not the most radical, nor the lightest, but it offers a blend of British character, technological refinement, and visual presence that will seduce those for whom the journey begins long before the first turn.
