Overview

As timeless as its manufacturer, the Bonneville continues serenely on its way, with subtle changes in 2014. New silencers soften the music of the parallel-twin engine. A little style on the latter doesn't displease us, but you have to be attentive to note the new machined cooling fins. Triumph has better padded the seat and added a passenger grab handle.

Retro lines right to the ends of the chrome, a two-tone paint scheme, an engine that seems straight out of the 1960s, the Bonneville fully plays the "revival" card, like the Kawasaki W 800. Difficult to access, the ignition key is hidden under the left turn signal. A press of the starter and the parallel-twin rumbles. The two overhead camshafts and the oversquare dimensions (bore greater than piston stroke) eliminate vibrations. Smooth and torquey, the engine is pleasant, without being impressive. In 2007, the twin increased in displacement, displaying the common cubic capacity for all Bonneville versions, namely 865 cm3. 5 horsepower more are available and a good kg of torque. 2008 saw the end of the carburetors and the welcome of fuel injection (hidden behind false carburetors). The series of modifications continues in 2009 with the adoption of a 17-inch front wheel, new spoked rims, the grafting of the Thruxton silencers, and modified, shorter mudguards. The gearbox, despite a rather short first gear, and the clutch contribute to the overall smoothness. An astonishing running silence for a twin with a 360° firing interval. Only the sound of the timing chain shocks the ear. The Bonnie therefore prefers quiet rides to spirited riding or long stretches of highway. The plumage matches the frame. The 205 kg dry weight are easy to handle and forgive clumsiness. The handling is good and the stability reassuring. Just like the engine, the chassis does not appreciate being rushed. The sparse / hard seat and the rear shock absorbers lacking in travel, detract from the comfort. The braking is in line with the motorcycle's tranquil spirit. The Bonneville is not the Bonnie one could have hoped for, but it proves to be a faithful companion for Sunday rides.
