Overview

The 850 V7 is one of those motorcycles where the emotion begins long before pressing the starter button. With it, time seems to crash like waves on a lighthouse. A little retro, a little neo, a lot of Guzzi and fundamentally different. While the Stone leans towards a rebellious attitude, the Special has long defended a timeless class, between the distinguished and the classic.

This iteration surprises with certain choices. Modernism has splashed over it, through a few details whose importance cannot be ignored. Of course, it has kept its old-school roadster physique, with its tank with marked cheeks, spoked rims and that twin engine whose age cannot be guessed. Only the side panels have been reworked, the rear fender shortened and the silencers revised; but from one generation to the next, the differences are not striking.

It is nevertheless from this that the equivocation will start. The V7 Special abandons its round headlight in favor of the headlight of all V7s, in the middle of which a stylized eagle shows its diurnal wings. Change of state, change of spirit. The dashboard is embedded in the same breath. Old school needle gauges are gone. It will be the dashboard of the entire family, with a digital display.

Perhaps the Special felt marginalized for wanting to change this way... In any case, it maintains its distance from the Stone thanks to its more classy colors, a large passenger grab handle, chrome accents, the abandonment of fork gaiters, a club seat, a chrome headlight surround and machined engine fins.

Having received the engine (detuned) from the V85 in 2021, the V7 found a new momentum and a more distant future. The cylinders share 853 cm3 in an iconic design scheme. Guzzi worked on the airbox, piston cooling and exhaust system, installed a third lambda probe, adopted ride-by-wire and increased the throttle body diameter. Result: the engine is Euro5+, and it gives a bonus. Power climbs from 65 horsepower to 67.3 horsepower at 6,900 rpm and torque goes from 7.5 mkg to 8.1 mkg, with a more full and smoothed curve.

For a long time, Moto-Guzzi thought that traction control had its place on the V7. It is still there but the arrival of ride-by-wire immediately influences it. Two riding Modes make their appearance, 'Stada' and 'Pioggia', acting on the level of the MGCT and the throttle response. A cruise control is also part of the package.

A certain V7 Sporta was entitled to a more muscular cycle part. The V7 Special prefers to keep its attributes from yesterday, with its steel double cradle frame, a 40 mm fork, two rear shock absorbers and a disc brake per wheel. Up front, the force is appreciable with a 4-piston Brembo caliper biting a 320 mm disc, but it should not be abused. ABS wakes up in case of need. The 260 rear disc and its 2-piston caliper will be a suitable reinforcement.

The Moto-Guzzi 850 V7 progresses in every way, discreetly, quietly, as befits its philosophy. It may have lost a little soul but not that passion that makes you choose a Guzzi before choosing a motorcycle.
