Overview

What’s the point of developing an adventure bike if most buyers never leave the pavement? Suzuki seems to have asked this pragmatic question after the launch of its V-Strom 800 D.E. and answers with the 800 SE, a version that resolutely turns its back on off-road trails to focus on the road. This is not a simple aesthetic variation, but a machine redesigned in its ergonomics and geometry for sporty touring.

Suzuki V-Strom 800SE

The change is radical from the first glance. The spoked wheels and the 90/90-21 front tire, symbols of off-road capability, are replaced by aluminum cast wheels and a 110/80-19 tire, a combination much more stable on asphalt. The suspension, reduced from 220 mm to an urban 150 mm of travel, confirms the orientation. The seat height drops to 825 mm, making the machine more accessible, while the riding triangle is reworked: a lower and more forward handlebar, rearset footpegs. You can feel that Suzuki wanted to create a more engaged, more precise position for those who ride fast and long on national roads.

The mechanical heart remains the 776 cm³ parallel-twin engine, timed at 270°, a unit that delivers 84 horsepower and 78 Nm of torque. It is not the fiercest in the category – a Honda Transalp or a KTM 790 Adventure leave it behind – but its linear character and ease of use are its strengths. Coupled with the S.I.R.S. electronic system with its three riding modes and traction control, it offers a reassuring and modern experience. The bi-directional quickshifter is a real plus for long relays.

Suzuki V-Strom 800SE

Practically speaking, the SE sacrifices some equipment from the D.E. to reach a more accessible price of €10,699. The radiator and engine guards disappear, and the suspension settings are simplified. But the essentials are preserved: the 5-inch TFT screen, the 20-liter fuel tank, the taller and wider windscreen (even if its limited adjustment of 30 mm is a bit symbolic). The braking system, with its two 310 mm discs and radial Nissin calipers, remains very honorable. With a reduced wheelbase and a weight of 223 kg fully fueled, it promises superior agility to its adventurer sister.

Suzuki V-Strom 800SE

This V-Strom 800 SE is a machine that knows exactly what it wants: to be an effective, comfortable, and accessible road-going trail bike. It targets the globetrotter looking for a lighter and less technical alternative to the large 1000 cm³ trail bikes, or the touring rider who wants a versatile base for sporty trips. It does not have the off-road ambitions of the D.E., nor the extreme versatility of a BMW F 900 GS, but it excels in its niche: the road, pure and simple. Suzuki has therefore succeeded in its bet: to offer two distinct characters with the same engine block, allowing the customer to choose without ambiguity between adventure and touring.
