Overview

So, here it is: Suzuki has finally decided to take its middleweight machine off the beaten path, and it’s a pleasant surprise. The V-Strom 800DE is no longer that somewhat restrained road-trail bike; with its Rally Edition, it arrives on rough terrain, claiming the title of a true adventurer. The intention is clear: to encroach on the territory of the Yamaha Ténéré 700 and the Aprilia Tuareg 660. The angular and loaded design announces the direction. It’s no longer a machine for riding around the block on pavement; it’s an invitation to take the back roads, even the most rutted ones.

Suzuki V-Strom 800DE Rally Edition

Under the "Rally" stickers and the additional armor, we find the heart of the beast: the all-new 776 cm3 parallel-twin. With 84 horsepower at 8500 rpm and nearly 78 Nm of torque, it doesn’t have the brutality of a Ducati twin, but it delivers its power with a reassuring linearity, perfect for technical riding. The aluminum under-engine protection box is a strong message: here, we anticipate scraping the ground. The equipment is serious for the price: Showa fork and mono-shock with generous 220 mm travel, Nissin brakes, 21/17-inch spoke wheels, and a modern 5-inch TFT dashboard. It’s complete, almost too much perhaps.

But all this comes at a cost, and not just financially. The main drawback is the weight on the scales. At 230 kilos fully fueled, it’s heavy compared to the competition. A Ténéré 700 weighs 204 kilos. The difference is immediately felt on the handlebars on a winding path or in a muddy rut. It requires more physical engagement, more anticipation. The seat height of 855 mm doesn’t help those with short legs, even though the center of gravity remains well managed. This is the price to pay for the equipment and the claimed robustness.

So, who is it for? Clearly for the adventurous globetrotter who wants a more versatile and technological motorcycle than the strict and spartan Ténéré, but without crossing the threshold (and the budget) of the large GS or Multistrada. It’s the ideal companion for those who imagine their travels with 70% road and 30% trails, and who appreciate the comfort of electronic aids like adjustable traction control and launch control. For the purist of technical single-track, the weight will be a limitation. For the modern explorer who runs on pavement but likes to have the option of dirt, it’s a very credible proposition.

Ultimately, the V-Strom 800DE Rally Edition is an honest and well-equipped machine. It proves that Suzuki can play in the big leagues of the middle adventure trail. It doesn’t have the killer lightness of some, but in return it brings a defined character, careful finishing, and a real off-road capability. At €12,499, it positions itself as a serious challenger, provided you accept its size. It’s not a trail-blazer, it’s a comfortable and capable explorer, ready to leave the straight lines behind to live the adventure.
