Overview

Does a trail necessarily have to weigh less than 200 kilos to claim adventure? Suzuki, with its V-Strom 800DE Rally Edition, answers in the negative. The Japanese manufacturer dares here with an assumed approach: that of a large machine laden with equipment, ready to face the road without denying its road heritage. We are far from the minimalist philosophy of so-called "knobby" machines. With its announced 230 kilos fully fueled, the Suzuki becomes heavier than competitors like the Yamaha Ténéré 700 or the Aprilia Tuareg 660, which cheerfully flirt with 200 kilos. A difference that will inevitably be felt when the terrain becomes technical or when it is necessary to lift it after a fall, despite the presence of the aluminum skid plate under the engine.

Suzuki V-Strom 800DE Rally Edition

The heart of the beast remains this brand new 776 cm3 parallel twin, delivering 84 horsepower and a frank torque of 78.5 Nm. A modern, supple and well-calibrated engine, which finds here its best expression thanks to a precise six-speed gearbox and relevant electronic aids. Four-level traction control, three engine maps and hill-start assist are part of the standard arsenal. The Rally Edition, for its part, is distinguished by a specific "factory machine" trim. Stickers, handguards, crash bars and other protections visually transform the motorcycle, giving it a more burly and prepared look. It is an aesthetic and utility kit, available as an accessory for owners of the standard version or integrated as standard for an additional charge.

On paper, the 800DE is not lacking in serious arguments. The Showa inverted fork and the mono-shock offer a generous 220 mm stroke, associated with 21-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked rims, shod with off-road tires. The braking, ensured by Nissin calipers, seems up to the mass to be controlled. With a 20-liter tank and a seat height of 855 mm, the Suzuki clearly addresses tall riders looking for a machine capable of long ranges and swallowing asphalt in comfort, while still maintaining a real off-road capability.

So, who is the rider of this V-Strom 800DE Rally? Certainly not the hardcore adventurer who spends his weekends tracing lines in rocky trails. The weight, despite the protections, remains a limitation. On the other hand, it finds its meaning perfectly with the touring-adventurer, for whom adventure begins after 500 kilometers of national roads and continues on forest tracks or stabilized dirt roads. It is a lightweight touring motorcycle, capable of straying from the road with more conviction than average. At €12,698, it positions itself as an interesting and well-equipped alternative to more radically off-road oriented trails but sometimes spartan. It proves that you can have an adventurous spirit without sacrificing comfort and versatility. An honest proposition, even if we would have liked Suzuki to lighten the weight bill a little.
