Overview

Having a beautiful and a good motorcycle is no longer enough to attract the premium clientele. Keen on technology, dynamic performance, and/or technical features above average, the modern motorcyclist expects more than two wheels, an engine, and a handlebar.

Especially when looking at MV-Agusta. At the Italian manufacturer, touring is the fast kind, and it combines with the 800 Turismo Veloce. More yachting than leisurely ride, actually. It is on this crossover that we discover clutch assist technology, which MV has named SCS. What is it all about?

Behind this acronym hides the "Smart Clutch System." An automatic system that manages the clutch by itself. To do this, the Italian engineers developed with Rekluse a set of very specific discs and components. One of the discs, equipped with counterweights, acts on the clutch thanks to centrifugal force, under the action of an electronic controller. As a result, engine speed determines the clutch and release phases.

The Turismo Veloce equipped with the SCS will be recognizable thanks to a transparent clutch cover of the most beautiful effect. And to satisfy purists, the clutch lever is still there because the system works "in duo": you can at any time choose to change gears classically or in automatic clutch.

Why develop its own type of clutch? Semi-continuous transmissions like CVT are not sporty enough for a motorcycle of this temperament. And robotic or double-clutch boxes are too complex and too heavy to pair with the 798 cm3 three-cylinder engine. The SCS wants to retain all the sportiness of the MV, not weigh them down and free the rider from clutch management. There is only the foot that works. MV took advantage of this technological contribution to install a parking brake, operable at the rear brake level.

With the Smart Clutch System, the firm of Varese wants to offer a smoother, more precise gear change while offering more gentleness, very practical when maneuvering in town. No need to touch the lever; except when starting. This semi-automatic clutch therefore joins the already well-supplied high-tech content of the 800 TV, namely the semi-active Skyhook suspensions, the color TFT dashboard screen, the GPS, the heated grips, the four riding modes, traction control, cruise control, the quickshifter, engine parameter settings, ABS, Bluetooth.... Arrrgg! A business jet, the motorcycle. Who will like to take off with 110 horsepower in the boiler. A deserved qualification because Italian mechanics have character.

Last point, the process is so well designed that it takes up no more space or weight than a classic assembly. However, this treat drives up an already salty bill. Count 2,000 euros more to relieve the left hand and enjoy the 34-liter capacity series cases.

The Turismo Veloce had to absorb Euro5 and it is not doing too badly. No loss to report in terms of power; only 12% more torque at mid-range; nice. The engine has received new parts, reduced friction, revised its exhaust and modified the gearbox ratios. The improvement in on-board life comes from a taller and wider bubble, a lower and more comfortable seat, a larger screen (5.5 inches) with new graphics and revised suspension parameters. The electronics gain an IMU, an angle-sensitive ABS, an improved 3.0 quickshifter, Bluetooth to connect the smartphone and a Mobisat system to track the bike if it is stolen.

In 2023, there are small things happening at the throttle grip level. The staff worked on the sensitivity to make it more intuitive and progressive. They also added a "space" of negative rotation to deactivate the cruise control. Engine electronic management has also been refined.
