Overview

What drives a manufacturer to charge €16,700 for a 798 cc naked bike when a Street Triple RS or an MT-09 SP get the job done for less? The answer fits in two words: MV Agusta. And two more: RR. The 2022 Brutale 800 RR doesn't play in the league of sensible roadsters. It's aimed at those who want an object, a mechanical sculpture capable of turning heads in a parking lot before the key is even turned. The MV Agusta Brutale 800 RR's spec sheet speaks for itself, but it's really in the flesh and steel that it commands respect.

MV Agusta Brutale 800 RR

Compared to the Rosso, the entry-level version of the range, the RR steps up a notch on every front. The 798 cc inline three-cylinder produces 140 horsepower at 12,300 rpm and 87 Nm of torque at 10,250 rpm. That's 28 horsepower more than the Rosso, from an engine that demands you chase the revs but rewards every climb through the rev range with a strong surge of thrust and a raw triple-cylinder howl that few competitors can match. The counter-rotating crankshaft, the specific treatment of internal components, and the redesigned MV Agusta Brutale 800 RR exhaust all contribute to that gain. In terms of outright performance, top speed reaches 244 km/h. For a mid-size, that's serious.

The onboard electronics took a leap forward with the 2021 update, carried over to the 2022 model year. The 5.5-inch color TFT display centralizes all information, from the eight-level traction control to the third-generation bi-directional quickshifter, along with cruise control and smartphone connectivity via the MV Ride app. The six-axis inertial measurement unit governs a Continental ABS system with Cornering function and an anti-wheelie system. Launch Control rounds out the arsenal. All of this wraps a motorcycle that, at 175 kg dry, remains remarkably light compared to a Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS or even a Ducati Streetfighter V2. This lightness comes at the cost of a 16.5-liter tank and a claimed fuel consumption of 5.9 L/100 km, which limits range on longer rides.

The tubular steel trellis frame with reinforced aluminum side plates, the fully adjustable 43 mm Marzocchi inverted fork, and the Sachs rear shock form a cohesive package alongside the Brembo braking system, with radial four-piston calipers on 320 mm front discs. Nothing to fault with the chassis: it's precise, communicative, and the 830 mm seat height remains accessible for most rider builds. For those looking for a used MV Agusta Brutale 800 RR, the 2019, 2020, or 2021 model years offer a very similar base, as updates have been incremental since the 2016 overhaul. On the other hand, the machine is not eligible for an A2 license, even restricted: that's clearly not its playground.

The 2022 MV Agusta Brutale 800 RR's price positions this Italian against rivals that are often more powerful or better equipped as standard. But no Yamaha, no Triumph delivers that feeling of straddling an MV Agusta Brutale 800 RR, that sense of sitting on a handcrafted mechanical jewel from Varese. That's both its strength and its limitation: you're buying emotion just as much as performance here. For the passionate rider, the lover of characterful roadsters and refined engineering, the Brutale 800 RR remains a choice of the heart rather than of reason. It forgives nothing, demands rhythm to express its potential, but rewards every corner with an intensity that the Japanese blockbusters long ago stopped offering.
