Overview
On this small planet teeming with life, metal, and trouble, certain names have found immortal places: VFR, GSX-R, Manx, Bonneville, R1, Monster, Chief, California, and so many others... Let's not delve into that, the scroll would be too long. Suddenly, the heart wavers towards one of Italy’s most beautiful creations. A remarkably desirable roadster from its release and one that is reinventing itself today: the MV-Agusta Brutale!
A little history about it? Quickly, as we won't dwell on the forty versions and special series released since the first episode. Perhaps the purest, the most suave, the most iconic; designed by the master Massimo Tamburini himself. Released in 2002, the first 750 Brutale was much more than a stripped-down 750 F4. It was the most desirable roadster in production.
The new 950 Brutale draws inspiration from this fantasy to renew a family whose blood is as red as gold. It is indeed in this version that it presents itself, in ORO. The name of prestige at MV-Agusta, accompanying each new model. The assurance of a high-end motorcycle, perfumed with noble materials. But let's not disrespect it, let's make a few introductions and appreciate its revisited styling.
A beauty! That’s what it could all be summed up as. The Schiranna diva has known how to transform while keeping her identity. She is recognizable instantly, captures time, and reduces the gaze to the sacrifice of desire. Completely new fairings embrace a sculpted tank, accompanying an even more striking headlight. We applaud the very beautiful design work of the rear section, with the under-seat compartment inherited from the 800 Brutale, the space-inspired rear light inspired by the 1000 Brutale, and the passenger footrests folded under the frame as on the 800 Dragster.
One flaw alters it. What a shame, but she had no choice: an infamous catalytic converter silencer weighs down, shreds her knees. The regulations are unkind to the paintbrush, which finds refuge in three exhaust pipes to allow the 3-cylinder engine to roar. MV-Agusta has still managed to perfectly clear the rear rim and its monobras. The conclusion is simple, you can’t help but find it beautiful.
This Brutale takes on a new engine within the family. An engine heading for a great career, which it began with the Enduro Veloce trail (actually on the premium LXP Orioli version). Having brought thrills (in the good sense of the term) on the adventurer, here it is brought to show more force to give the Brutale 950 Oro the character it deserves.
This 931 cm3 develops 148 horsepower! At 11,200 rpm. That's 24 horsepower more than on the Enduro Veloce. The torque is also a little more robust (+ 5 Nm) with 107 Nm / 10.9 mkg at 8,400 rpm. These maximum values will be sought higher in the rev range, but it is vigor that we seek in a roadster. Even more so when it bears that name. To find this energy, MV has modified the cylinder head, installed larger valves (in steel), optimized the combustion chambers, revised the intake and exhaust passages, redesigned the camshafts, reinforced the valve seats, pistons, and cylinder head gasket, improved the cooling circuits, increased the size of the throttle bodies (50 mm), and softened the clutch.
After all that, this opposed-piston engine promises a beautiful power output, a strong mid-range, and at least 85% of the torque from 3,500 rpm. Some will say that this 9.5-liter engine delivers the same power as the F3 800 RR. Admittedly, but the racer was highly strung, bringing the engine close to its limits. Whereas for its new engine, the parent company is still far from the maximum potential.
New engine, new chassis. It retains the main lines of the house, with its steel trellis frame connected to side plates. The design has however been revised, and it is now more rigid, lighter, and intended to give more precision and control with a more open steering rake and a longer wheelbase thanks to the extended swingarm. There is no doubt that the 950 Brutale will gain in efficiency. However, one thing bothers us. The frame plates and the swingarm are made of aluminum. Previously, MV-Agusta series ORO models flattered the ego with the use of magnesium for these same parts. It was in the past, before, and we still have it a little in our hearts. A way to contain the price? Not on when you discover the bill.
Let’s rattle on? It won’t be easy seeing the Alcantara seats, the carbon parts, the Termignoni titanium exhausts, the Brembo Hypure brakes, and the magnificent Öhlins suspensions. The Brutale makes you want to own it before even riding it.
Just so, the Brutale of the new generation also revises the rider’s ergonomics, to give both more comfort and more control. The seat is larger and thicker (for the passenger too), the footrests repositioned for more ground clearance, the handlebar raised and advanced for a better grip, and the tank is intended to be more accommodating to the work of the legs.
Does it need more to distinguish itself from its ancestors? It will benefit from their electronic acquisitions while adding its own prism. What modifications on this 950 Brutale:
Because the 950 Brutale will only thrive by releasing its dynamism. The horses of Varese are not known for being calm. They will be guided by an inverted NIX 30 fork and a Swedish TTX36 fully adjustable damper, forged wheels with reduced inertia, and formidable brakes. The four-piston Brembo calipers, controlled by a radial master cylinder with automatic bleeding, bite down on 320 mm discs. The rear conceives its work with 2 pistons and a 220 mm disc.
It has managed to contain its weight. With 195 kilograms (without fuel), the 950 weighs only one kilogram more than the 800 Brutale. The lithium battery and carbon elements are not strangers to this.
Divine, the MV-Agusta 950 Brutale ORO will be produced in only 300 copies. A plate above the handlebar will remind you of its number in the series. The manufacturer likes to maintain its mixture of rarity and exclusivity. As always, the price is significant - €26,600 – and yet less violent than usual. The 750 Brutale Oro of 2002 cost (with inflation) the equivalent of €50,000. The first 1000 Brutale Oro was €43,000. But can we really compare them? Their destinies, their powers, and their equipment do not want to be compared. More than a superb roadster, this motorcycle announces a new era in this family.
