Overview

This Monster questions itself. What will happen to it when it sees that the parent company has replaced the 937 twin with a brand new 890 engine... except for it? The 2024 stock allows it to preserve its place in the catalog; pending a new mutation? The future must preserve its fundamental spirit: An engine, two wheels, a handlebar.

That’s the simplest definition of a motorcycle. Add a killer look to the recipe and you have the first Monster. Advance to the 4th generation to appreciate a complete revision of the original concept. Now, enhance it with top-of-the-line suspension, exhausts that crack, a generous helping of sportiness, and there you have a burgeoning Monster SP fresh out of the oven.

Never has Ducati’s roadster borne this denomination. The S, yes, on numerous iterations; the R; the dark; the Matrix; the Rs… The Monster seeks to offer more than the best of itself, captivated by the exceptional nature of other family members. The Panigale V4 SP and Streetfighter V4 SP have set the bar extremely high in their categories.

Briefly, it wants sport, thrills in the knees, and curves to scrape elbows. Its styling goes in the same direction, largely inspired by the GP Desmosedici. Count on the small windscreen, the steering damper, the envy-inducing red seat, the matching seat cover, and a lithium-ion battery to spice up the preliminaries. The latter subtracts 1.7 kilos from the total weight of the machine. But, of course, what it shows most promises beautiful riding moments or some spirited riding.

Like all the fanciest Monsters, the Monster SP receives Öhlins components. Totally adjustable, unlike the suspension of the standard model. The 43 mm diameter NIX 30 inverted fork and the shock absorber can not only be fine-tuned for efficiency but also offer 10 mm of additional stroke. With 140 and 150 mm of travel, the suspension allows for a bit of ground clearance and a more important maximum angle; to be added to the road feel and the typically Öhlins quality. The fork also participates in the equation, with 600 grams less than the Kayaba on the other Monster.

No trellis frame on this generation of Monster, no monobrach (a shame, especially this SP), but still a desmodromic distribution and a twin. The 937 cm3 engine delivers 111 horsepower at 9250 rpm. Already enough to go fast and have fun. The torque reaches its maximum of 9.5 mkg a little earlier, at 6500 rpm. It will express itself a little better here, with the exhaust gases in a double Termignoni titanium and carbon silencer. A bit of tinkering (it’s forbidden) would allow the twin to reveal all the measure of its dry and cavernous rumble. In the case of an urgent need for more power, it becomes opportune to consider the Streetfighter V2 – with a Panigale engine stronger and more sophisticated, 14 kilos more and a larger check.

A desire for performance also involves improving braking capabilities. Work for the Stylema calipers, the Brembo reference that equips most hypersport and hyper-roadsters. A formidable force and feel, particularly appreciable during muscular entries into corners. These calipers allow you to scrape another 400 grams, while the aluminum flanges of the 320 mm discs save another 500 grams.

The overall weight reduction of this SP via the battery, the braking system, and the fork totals 3.2 kgs. Yet, the TPF weight of the motorcycle only drops by 2 kgs, to 186 units. I don’t understand…

The Monster SP benefits from a specific calibration of its Riding Modes to be more sporty. A new “Wet” mode is added to the “Sport” and “Road” * modes. The entire dynamic is governed by the traction control, wheelie control, launch control, the ABS active in corners, the up & down shifter… and above all, how far the rider wants to twist the handlebars and grips. Between the throttle, the silicon intelligence, and the road, the Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV rubber adds a notch of efficiency.

Everything is controlled from the 4.3-inch color TFT screen. Despite the positioning and the requested price, Ducati does not even offer multimedia connectivity via Bluetooth; still an option. Young wolves, freshly arrived in the pack, will be happy to know that the SP will be available in a version A2. An exciting Bolognese, whose tasting is… costly.

The specs of the Ducati Monster SP Riding Modes:

Sport - The engine delivers 111 hp and a direct throttle response from Ride by Wire (RbW) at throttle opening, a reduced intervention of the DTC traction control system, and ABS level 2. Rear lift-up control is moderate. DWC wheelie control is set to a level that favors sporty riding.

Road - The engine delivers 111 hp with a more progressive RbW throttle response at throttle opening, a more significant intervention of the DTC system, and ABS level 3 to guarantee maximum stability during braking and rear lift-up control. DWC is set to a level optimal for relaxed riding.

Rain - The engine delivers 75 hp, with a particularly softened RbW throttle response at throttle opening for maximum safety on slippery surfaces, an even more significant intervention of the DTC and ABS level 3 to guarantee maximum stability during braking and rear lift-up control.
