Overview
When all the competition is engaged in a technological arms race with sky-high price tags, what's left for the rider who simply wants to head out on long journeys without mortgaging the house? The Moto Guzzi V85 TT Travel 2022 offers an Italian-flavored answer. The first neo-retro adventure motorcycle on the market, it banks on charm rather than brute force. Its longitudinal V2 displacing 853 cc, set at 90 degrees, produces a mere 76 horsepower at 7500 rpm. On paper, that's modest compared to a BMW F 850 GS Adventure or a Triumph Tiger 900 Rally. But the 82 Nm of torque available from just 5000 rpm changes the game in everyday riding. The Euro5 transition in 2021 cost it 4 horsepower, that's true. In return, the torque curve filled out in the rev range where you actually ride — the one that matters when you're stringing together back roads through the Massif Central with a passenger and luggage.

The great explorer of the Guzzi family — that's her. Yet the Moto Guzzi V85 TT Travel's spec sheet reveals a minimalist approach to touring. Compared to the base V85 TT, priced at 13,059 euros, the Travel version at 13,999 euros adds a tall screen increased by 60%, plastic side cases with aluminum trim, LED fog lights, heated grips, and the MIA multimedia platform for smartphone connectivity. The whole package adds 13 kilos, bringing the total to 243 kg wet. That's fair for a fully equipped tourer, even if you feel the extra weight during low-speed maneuvers. The cases offer asymmetric capacity, with the left one reduced by the exhaust line, but the setup is enough for a week-long trip for two.
The main criticism? Guzzi simply dipped into its accessories catalog without touching the mechanicals. No enlarged fuel tank, no recalibrated suspension, no reinforced engine guards. The BMW F 850 GS Adventure gains an additional 23-liter tank and dedicated suspension. The KTM 890 Adventure R completely overhauls its chassis. Even Suzuki, with the V-Strom 1050 XT, offers dedicated chassis settings. The V85 TT Travel keeps its 23-liter tank, its 41 mm inverted fork, and its rear monoshock — both adjustable for preload and rebound but identical to the standard version. With a claimed fuel consumption of 4.9 liters per 100 km, range sits around 400 kilometers. Decent, nothing more.

What saves the day is the character. The shaft drive final transmission, rare in this displacement class, eliminates all chain maintenance and brings invaluable convenience on the road. The tubular steel frame, the 803 mm seat height, and the 1450 mm wheelbase create an accessible motorcycle, even for average-sized riders. The electronics have matured with five riding modes, including a Sport mode that sharpens throttle response and a fully customizable Custom mode. Traction control, ABS, cruise control, and a 4.3-inch TFT display round out an equipment list that, while not overflowing, covers the essentials. The wheels, lightened by 1.5 kg, now accept tubeless tires in 110/80-19 front and 150/70-17 rear — a real practical advantage in case of a flat tire far from anywhere.

The Moto Guzzi V85 TT Travel test ride leaves mixed feelings. On one hand, an endearing personality, a competitive price against the premium competition, and everything needed to travel anywhere across the seasons. On the other, a superficial Travel transformation that doesn't tap into the platform's full potential. For those seeking a no-nonsense adventure tourer with a characterful engine and simplified maintenance thanks to the shaft drive, it remains a solid choice. Forum reviews confirm this trend: you buy a Guzzi V85 TT Travel for its soul, not for its specs. And on the used market, the 2020, 2021, and 2022 model years trade with reasonable depreciation — proof that the love affair holds up well over time.
