Overview
Forty years. That is how long it took BMW to transform a cobbled-together R 80 into a global icon of motorcycle travel, and the Bavarian brand is not letting the anniversary pass without bringing out the commemorative artillery. The F 850 GS Adventure receives its celebratory livery — a golden-bronze scheme streaking the front fairing, tank, and seat with flashes reminiscent of the ochre tracks of North Africa. Hard to go unnoticed, especially with handguards whose bulk is more suggestive of a construction loader than a discreet accessory.

But this anniversary edition is not merely a fresh coat of paint. BMW had the good sense to integrate what it calls the PRO finish, meaning virtually every option available in the catalogue. The centre stand, heated grips, tyre pressure sensor, Up&Down shifter, ESA Dynamic semi-active suspension, cruise control, GPS preparation, Pro riding modes, and even the intelligent emergency call system are all part of the package. The result shows on the price tag: 16,400 euros, a figure that places it almost nose-to-nose with a base R 1250 GS. That is the paradox of this machine — it targets the rider who finds the big GS too imposing, yet ends up costing almost as much.
The 853 cc parallel-twin produces 95 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and 92.2 Nm of torque at 6,250 rpm. This is not a track engine; it is a distance tool — flexible at the bottom, honest at the top, without the characterful emphasis of the flat-twin in the 1250. The six-speed gearbox operates with serenity, and the shifter included in this pack turns gear changes into formalities. At 248 kg fully fuelled for 23 litres of range and a top speed measured at 197 km/h, the profile is clearly that of the long-distance tourer that also accepts broken tarmac, stony tracks, and remote mountain passes.
The 2021 update also brings elements common to the entire F family: LED indicators, a USB socket on the dashboard, ABS Pro, and DTC traction control join the standard equipment. The Pro riding modes now incorporate engine braking control and better-calibrated dynamic braking. For shorter-statured riders, BMW adds a low seat and suspension lowering option to the catalogue, which puts the standard 875 mm seat height into perspective. It is a welcome consideration on a machine that, without these adjustments, left a few riders standing.
Faced with a Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro or a KTM 890 Adventure R, the F 850 GS Adventure 40 Years plays the card of exhaustive equipment rather than sporting lightness. It weighs more than its direct rivals, but it arrives at the start line more fully loaded than any other. The intended audience is the organised traveller who prefers to set off without an options checklist rather than seek the adrenaline of a trail-oriented machine. The anniversary edition adds a layer of visual distinction that will work just as well in an alpine resort car park as on a Moroccan piste. BMW knows how to sell a dream with method, and this F 850 is a coherent demonstration of that — even if the final invoice gives pause to those who thought they were saving money over the bigger sibling.
