Overview
There are motorcycles you don’t buy, you adopt. The Moto Guzzi 1100 California EV belongs to this rare category, that of machines that impose their conditions from the first contact. Two hundred fifty-one kilograms dry weight, a seat 780 mm from the ground, and this 90° L-twin that proudly protrudes on each side of the frame as if to signal to the whole world its presence: the "Calif" is nothing like a discreet motorcycle.

This 1064 cc twin is the heart of the whole affair. Seventy-three horsepower at 6400 rpm and 92.2 Nm of torque at 5000 rpm, the figures seem modest on paper compared to a Honda VTX or a Kawasaki Vulcan of the same era, but they lie. The Guzzi engine isn’t told in raw data, it’s felt through the palms, in the kidneys, in that deep, irregular rumble that distinguishes a transverse V2 from everything the Japanese competition offers. Here, each piston stroke is perceptible, almost tactile. It’s deliberately primitive, and that’s exactly what its buyers are looking for.
The shaft drive, a signature feature for decades, adds to this feeling of quiet robustness. The 5-speed gearbox, on the other hand, remains the historical Achilles' heel of the lineage: its shifts lack precision and speed, which confirms that the California EV has no sporting vocation. The announced top speed of 200 km/h exists somewhere in the technical specifications, but no one buys this Moto Guzzi 1100 California EV to play at timing themselves on the highway. The braking, however, is up to the task with two 320 mm discs at the front and a 282 mm disc at the rear, sufficient to master the 251 kg without excessive effort.
On the road, the California EV plays a movement that European customs have practically abandoned in favor of American copies. Comfort is present, the position relaxed without being extreme, the 19-liter tank allows you to swallow the kilometers without panic. The 2002 finish is acceptable, without reaching Japanese standards, and some elements deserve regular monitoring on used specimens, which is now the case for almost the entire park available at 13,490 euros new at the time.

It’s not a machine for the curious or custom tourists. The Moto Guzzi 1100 California EV is for those who already know the history of the Mandello del Lario brand, or who are ready to be converted by an engine whose exceptional character quickly erases its imperfections. The target audience is not the young license holder or the track enthusiast lacking sensations. It’s the patient long-distance rider, the lover of authenticity, the one who prefers kilometers that stretch out to seconds that are counted.
