Overview
Three hundred thousand euros. Take the time to read this figure. This is the price at which Midual, a French manufacturer based in the Landes region, offers its Type 1 Quintessence. A sum that defies motorcycle comprehension and places this machine in a category of its own, that of collector's items on two wheels where Brough Superior and the Ecosse Spirit of 1000 find themselves in familiar territory.

Behind this price lies a radical philosophy. The longitudinal flat-twin engine with a displacement of 1036 cm³ is angled at 180 degrees, which distinguishes it from a classic boxer and gives it a unique character, a sonic and vibrational signature that belongs to Midual alone. One hundred horsepower at 8200 rpm and 102 Nm of torque from 5500 rpm, this is a measured power output for a motorcycle of this size. This is far from the explosive figures of a Ducati Panigale or a BMW S 1000 RR. But the Type 1 does not play in that league. It claims something else, a balance between performance and refinement, like the double-walled aluminum frame that serves as an integrated fuel tank, a bold technical solution that condenses the structure and fuel storage into a single sculptural element.
The chassis features Öhlins suspension components front to back, a 43 mm FGRT inverted fork with 120 mm of travel at the front, and a TTX36 mono-shock with identical travel at the rear. Brembo signs the braking system. These names are not just there to look good on a specification sheet; they represent the best in standard equipment. With a weight of 239 kg when ready to ride, the Midual is not light, but its low center of gravity thanks to the horizontal engine should compensate on the road. The announced top speed of 200 km/h also underscores that the vocation of this motorcycle is not to devour the highway at full speed but to savor the winding road with meticulous care.

The target audience is not looking for a two-wheeled vehicle to get to work. The buyer of the Quintessence probably already collects manufacturer's watches or grand touring cars. He sees in this French motorcycle a functional work of art, a unique piece produced by hand by a team of a few artisans. A compression ratio of 12 to 1, a bore of 100 mm for a stroke of 66 mm, four valves per cylinder, these details speak to an informed enthusiast who reads specification sheets as others read gallery catalogs.

The only real criticism one can make is philosophical. Midual claims French excellence but at 300,000 euros, the Type 1 automatically cuts itself off from any motorcyclist, even passionate, who does not have a substantial personal fortune. It is accessible only to a tiny minority, which makes it more of a symbol than a tool for shared pleasure. This is its assumed choice, its very consistency. The question remains whether the world needs such an exclusive motorcycle or whether this Quintessence will exist mainly in the glossy pages of luxury magazines rather than on the nearby Pyrenean passes.
